Atletico Madrid will be keen to ensure this is not a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ when they take on Eibar at their Estadio Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday evening, following their resounding triumph over Marseille in the Europa League during the week.
Atletico Madrid registered a convincing 3-0 win over Marseille in the final and will be keen to end their season on a high note here, particularly as they’ll want to pip their crosstown rivals, Real Madrid, into second spot as well.
Atletico are three points ahead of third placed Real, but their rivals have a far superior goal difference. The hosts come into this clash having failed to win their last two on home turf following a draw with Real Betis and a 2-0 loss to Espanyol, but they’d previously put together a seven-match winning streak amidst an overall home record of 12-5-1 28/6. In addition, Atletico Madrid have won the last five encounters at home against Eibar.
Onto the visitors then, and they currently occupy a creditable top half position in La Liga, sitting in ninth spot thanks to three wins from their last five matches overall, which includes victories over Espanyol, Girona and Las Palmas.
However, these three recent wins have been recorded against bottom half opposition, and Sunday’s challenge will be a lot tougher against one of the best club sides in Europe who are fresh from winning the Europa League.
Taking nothing away from Eibar, they’ve had a pretty solid campaign in the Spanish top flight and have held their own against some really good teams, but an away record of 6-4-8 16/29, along with their past history against Atletico Madrid may well see them fall short here.
