Football – Europe – Champions League Betting Tips

The second part of this week’s instalment of the Champions League provides us with plenty more betting opportunities and my next pick features a Group A clash between Atletico Madrid and Monaco as the match day 5 betting tips continue.

Atletico Madrid are in a strong position ahead of match day 5 as they basically just need to avoid defeat to Monaco to put themselves in the box seat to progress through to the knockout rounds. Even if third placed Club Brugge (who are 5 points behind) win both of their matches, Atletico Madrid have the favourable head-to-head over the Belgians as they beat them 3-1 at home on match day 2.

Atletico Madrid hold a good record at home in the Champions League having suffered just one defeat from their last 16 matches at their Estadio Wanda Metropolitano which was a 2-1 loss to Chelsea last season.

Forwards Griezmann (3 goals) and Correa (2 goals) are the most likely for the home side.

Monaco ended a terrible run of 12 matches without a win in Ligue 1 on the weekend when they registered a much needed 1-0 win away at Caen to hand Thierry Henry his first win as manager of Monaco.

The French outfit have been a mere shadow of their former selves with this domestic campaign being an utter disaster and their primary concern right now is to avoid an unthinkable relegation down to Ligue 2.

At the time of Henry taking over at Monaco, the Principality were in 18th place in Ligue 1 – they now sit in 19th place despite the recent win at Caen, so they’ve effectively gone backwards since the former Arsenal and Barcelona striker took over the reigns.

Monaco’s Champions League campaign has mirrored their Ligue 1 season so far as the visitors sit bottom of Group A with just one point to their name – thanks to a 1-1 draw away at Club Brugge. However, the win at Caen might spark some life into Henry’s troops and they’ve lost by 3 goals or more in just 3 of their last 19 matches in the Champions League.

Of course, Henry has inherited a much weaker squad than that of the side that won Ligue 1 a couple of seasons ago, but my betting tips suggest they can at least avoid a heavy defeat in Madrid on Wednesday night.
