Atletico Madrid Preview – Can Atletico defeat rivals and overtake them in the battle for the title?

There has been a significant transition in terms of the playing squad at Atletico Madrid over the summer and we’re seeing that have an effect on the club’s on field performances. With so much experience departing the club in the last couple of months it was bound to have an impact on results and performances. To the credit of the players who have come in, Atletico still find themselves in a decent league position – sitting third and just one point behind Real who occupy top spot coming into the weekend. Both their city rivals and Barcelona – their two main challengers for the title – have not been consistent in the early part of the season either which has meant there is little to choose between the top teams.

Atleti’s league form has seen them win four, lose one and draw one so far. Their sole defeat came away to a Real Sociedad team who are once place above them in the table whilst they followed that loss with a goalless draw at home to Celta Vigo. It meant that the away win in midweek over Mallorca was crucial approaching derby weekend. It added to victories that had already been secured against Getafe, Leganes and Eibar, all teams they would expect to beat. A win on Saturday would not only see them leapfrog their rivals but mean they go top for at least 24 hours.

Real Madrid Preview – Will Real’s recent resurgence continue at home of their bitter rivals and see them stay op of La Liga?

Talk of a crisis is only ever round the corner when it comes to Real Madrid and that was certainly the feeling following the 3-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League. Considering there was talk of replacing Zinedine Zidane following that defeat you can be forgiven for being surprised that Real sit top of La Liga. There’s been a lot of soul searching after Paris but the players and Zidane have been able to pick up two consecutive league wins. A very important 1-0 win away to Sevilla and then a comfortable 2-0 success at home to Osasuna. Equally important as the wins are the clean sheets which have been hard to come by.

It would be naive to think that everything is rosy now after a couple of wins. The pressure is still on Real and Zidane knows he will be under scrutiny in such a high profile game against a title rival. There has been a change of style since that PSG loss with Real adopting a more pragmatic approach. That will need to be the case on Saturday where they are likely to come in for an early barrage. If they can withstand that it will allow their own attacking players to have an impact.

Key-Facts – Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid

  • Real have had to rally since losing heavily in Europe but now find themselves top of La Liga

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid Betting Advice

These derby games have always been intense but they have taken on even more significance in the last decade as Atletico have gotten closer to their arch rivals. That’s been more more relevant than this campaign.  From the start it was seen as a three-way battle for La Liga. Atletico are no longer inferior to Real and they will be looking to show that here.
Real won on their last visit here which was one of their best performances last season. Atleti will still be hurting from that and looking to make amends. There’s no doubt Real have shown a better attitude since that defeat in Paris and come here in confident mood. The key will be if they can withstand early pressure and settle into the game. This is still a very new Atletico squad and this game could come early for them and Real could take the win for the second year in a row in this game.
