Atletico Madrid Preview – Los Rojiblancos back to its miserly best?
When La Liga returned earlier this month, Atletico Madrid (3rd – W14 D13 L4) were outside of the Champions League places having enduring the sort of campaign, one littered with draws, that implied a top-four finish could hardly be guaranteed. Four fixtures later, after three wins and a draw, the team have climbed up to third in the standings. Suddenly, all is rosy once more in the Diego Simeone household.
Victory in Levante on Tuesday, which came in fortuitous circumstances courtesy of a first-half own goal, a third successive game in which Atletico claimed maximum points without allowing for a goal to be conceded. Almost as though the Simeone side of old is back, even if recent opponents haven’t been anyone of real note. A 1-1 draw away to Athletic Bilbao preceding to nil wins over Osansuna, Valladolid and now Levante.
In the wider scheme of things, it all means Atletico remain unbeaten in La Liga since the very beginning of February, with five victories and four draws accrued. Six points now separate them and fifth placed Getafe, so the necessity to pick up wins isn’t quite the same as it once was. Even so, Los Rojiblancos are formidable on their own patch – with only Barcelona winning there in the league so far this season (W9 D5 L1).

It isn’t easy retaining faith in a side recently hit for six on the last occasion I previewed a game of theirs. That occasion being last weekend’s 6-0 rout in Celta Vigo, losing heavily to a side without a goal in four games prior. So, I suppose the question now is: is it fair to hold one bad performance (albeit an alarmingly bad performance) against an Alaves (13th – W9 D8 L14) side who are otherwise enjoying another reasonably solid campaign?
Nine of the fifteen defeats sustained so far this season were by no more than a couple goals, with their previous largest margin by three goals. So the aberration in Vigo was certainly an anomaly. Moreover, Celta Vigo have since backed up that win by beating Real Sociedad – a side harbouring top-four aspirations who were also beaten at the Mendizorrotza by Alaves earlier this month.
Unfortunately, that aforementioned win might also be filed under ‘anomaly’. Asier Garitano’s side have slumped to three defeats without scoring either side of their Sociedad triumph. The first of those away to bottom club Espanyol (2-0), while the latter at home to Osasuna (0-1) last Tuesday. Their cause not aided by a bout of ill-discipline, having been reduced to ten man on two separate instances since the restart.
