Atletico Madrid – Defensive prowess a thing of the past?

We’ve known for quite some time that last season’s La Liga champions would not be successful in defending their title. However, it could yet get worse. Last week’s chastening loss to Barcelona at Camp Nou, shipping four goals in a league game for the first time in more than nine years, saw Diego Simeone’s faltering charges fall out of the Champions League places as a consequence of said 4-2 defeat.

In terms of chances created, Atletico didn’t actually do a great deal wrong, finishing the contest with nearly double the amount of xG – 1.72 to 0.96 – as the Catalans. But it was a familiar tale of woe defensively. That was the seventh league game in eight conceding at least twice, keeping a single clean sheet across their last nine in the competition. Standards are on the decline, with that now two wins in eight (D1 L5).

Key Stat: Five defeats in the past eight La Liga matches has seen Atletico Madrid drop to fifth in the standings. However, their form at home remains steadfast, winning four of their last five league fixtures at the Wanda Metropolitano.

 

 

Getafe – Azulones to continue their La Liga ascent?

Former Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores is quietly rebuilding his reputation in Spain. It helps to know the surroundings, having spent two previous spells in charge of the Madrid-based outfit. Last Friday’s convincing 3-0 win at home to struggling Levante continued their outstanding return to form, with that seven points from the last nine available, four wins in six and only one loss in the last ten (W5 D4).

As such, the Azulones can approach this trip to Atletico Madrid in a relatively relaxed manner. Seven points now stand between them and the bottom three. A top-half finish might soon be on the agenda, currently five points from tenth-placed Celta Vigo. For this to materialise, though, a sharp improvement on a dismal return that is five points from eleven away league games (D5 L6) simply has to be forthcoming.

Key Stat: Getafe have won four La Liga home games on the bounce but are one of only two sides, the other being a Levante side bottom of the table, without an away victory in 2021-22. Across their 11 away league outings thus far, they have scored just three times and produced eight blanks, failing to score in four of the last five said fixtures.
