Preview: The Wanda Metropolitano is quite the spectacle. Liverpool certainly retain fond memories, having secured the club’s sixth European title here in 2019-20, but have had much less luck when facing Atletico Madrid. Could that be set to change on Tuesday?

Atletico Madrid – Suarez & Co to haunt Klopp’s men again?

Held to a goalless draw on their first outing in this season’s tournament, two-time Champions League finalists Atletico Madrid very nearly came unstuck again in Milan on Matchday 2. Trailing AC Milan since the 20th minute, late goals from Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez – the latter’s clocking in at 96:32 after dispatching a dubiously awarded penalty – turned things right around for the La Liga champions.

That was the fourth goal among their most recent seven in the competition to be scored inside the final ten minutes, which includes each of the last three. Meanwhile opponents Liverpool, whom they trail in second place in Group B by two points, have scored all but one of their eight strikes in Europe this season before the 80th minute. Which could mean more late drama beckons inside the Wanda Metropolitano.

And speaking of this venue, it should be duly noted Atletico hasn’t managed a home Champions League win here in four previous attempts (D3 L1). Finding the net once across this barren run. On the flip side, their record versus England’s most decorated club in European competitions is such that they will fancy their chances of at least picking up a point: they are unbeaten across all four such encounters (W2 D2).

Liverpool – Egyptian King can inspire Reds in Madrid?

As the only team in Group B to win on both matchdays, six-time European champions Liverpool could make their participation in the competition’s latter stages all but set in stone should they extend their winning start in Madrid. Jurgen Klopp’s side have already plundered eight goals – only Bayern Munich netting as many – in getting the better of AC Milan at Anfield (3-2) and FC Porto in Portugal (1-5).

Over the weekend, the Reds became the first English top-flight team in history to score 3+ goals in seven consecutive away matches in all competitions. Furthermore, they are currently without defeat in six Champions League road outings, scoring on average three per game as they recorded five victories during this spell. So they are well placed to end their wretched run against Tuesday’s hosts.

Liverpool has never before beaten Atletico Madrid, though, while their recent record in Spain also leaves a lot to be desired. They’ve won none of their seven recent away meetings versus La Liga sides (D1 L6). However, boasting arguably Europe’s most in-form forward obviously boosts their cause. Mohamed Salah has scored in his last eight matches, and in all of his last five away in the Champions League.

Atletico Madrid Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

Diego Simeone can have no excuses should his side come up short. With no La Liga fixture over the weekend, the Argentine has been able to plan exclusively for this fixture and should boast the fresher set of players. His team were underwhelming against FC Porto and AC Milan, though, scoring twice as they scraped four points together. Conversely, Liverpool scored eight from near identical fixtures and won them both.

Atletico Madrid Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Liverpool resume their search for a first ever win over Atletico Madrid, the Spanish side remaining unbeaten across all four previous meetings (W2 D2).
  • Whereas Atletico boast a clean sheet in four of five home games this season, Liverpool have scored 3+ in each of their past seven competitive away matches.
  • Mohamed Salah scored one of the goals of the season in the Reds’ 5-0 romp in the league away to Watford, meaning he has found the net in each of his last eight games.

Although the head-to-head between the clubs clearly favours a positive outcome for our hosts, the form of this Liverpool side cannot be ignored. Nor can the exceptional performances of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian is looking to score in his ninth consecutive game, in a team which has netted 3+ in eight consecutive away games. Klopp is also boosted by the return of goalkeeper Alisson as well as key defensive midfielder Fabinho.
