Atletico Madrid Preview – Simeone’s charges short odds to make it twelve unbeaten?

Outside the Champions League places when La Liga received the green light to resume, Atletico Madrid (3rd – W15 D14 L4) knew they needed to knuckle down and add points to the board quickly to avoid the unthinkable. Six matches into the resumption and Diego Simeone’s men remain unbeaten (W4 D2), collecting 14 points from a possible 18, and now look strong favourites to secure a top-four finish.

At the time of writing, Atletico had the comfort of a seven-point cushion over Getafe in fifth, whose game in hand will have played out 24 hours earlier away to league leaders Real Madrid. The latter the chief beneficiaries from Los Colchoneros’ 2-2 draw in Barcelona on Tuesday, with a Saul Niguez brace from the penalty spot dealing the latest blow to the Catalans’ diminishing La Liga title defence.

That midweek stalemate extended Atletico Madrid’s unbeaten run in the league to eleven (W6 D5), last losing in the competition away to Real Madrid in February. During which time their usually impregnable defence was breached by seven different opponents, keeping a clean sheet in one of their previous four at Wanda Metropolitano, where only Barcelona have beaten Simeone’s charges in 2019/20.

Mallorca Preview – Survival hopes depend on positive outcome in Madrid?

The Balearic Islanders would finally get off the mark earlier this week, and what a way which to do so. Mallorca (18th – W8 D5 L20) put on a scoring clinic at home to Celta Vigo, who were enjoying something of a renaissance, on Tuesday, scoring five times from chances equating to 1.69 xGF as they comfortably dispatched the side directly above them in the La Liga standings. The 5-1 scoreline a touch flattering you might say.

Safety is now five points from reach. So, while clearly a huge win in midweek, there is still plenty more work to be done across their final five fixtures. The wriggle room is minimal, though. Every point matters therefore, meaning Mallorca desperately need something from their maiden visit to Wanda Metropolitano. A truly rotten away record this season – the worst in all of La Liga in 2019/20 – hints at disappointment ahead.

This season, Mallorca have won only once on their travels in sixteen attempts (W1 D2 L13), avoiding defeat just 19% of the time and failing to do so on each of their recent ventures to Athletic Bilbao (3-1), Real Madrid (2-0) and Villarreal (1-0). No team has fewer points than their 6 out of a possible 48 from said matches. An incredibly alarming statistic regardless, but even more so ahead of facing one of the division’s top sides.

Atletico Madrid Vs Mallorca Betting Advice

Confidence should be high in both camps after strong midweek performances – Atletico Madrid holding Barcelona to a 2-2 draw in Catalonia while Mallorca hammered Celta Vigo 5-1 at home. Unfortunately for the latter it represented a sole win since the restart (W1 D1 L4), which is in sharp contrast to Atletico winning four and drawing two of their six post-lockdown fixtures.

Atletico Madrid Vs Mallorca – Key Facts

  • Unbeaten in eleven league games (W6 D5), Atletico Madrid would secure six out of ten home wins this season by a one goal margin.
  • One win in six (W1 D1 L4) since the restart for Mallorca, who have tasted defeat in 13 of their 16 away matches in 2019/20 – of those defeats, nine were to nil.
  • Atletico Madrid eased to a 2-0 scoreline when these teams met in Mallorca on Matchday 6, halting a sequence of four head-to-head contests without winning (D3 L1).

Mallorca are currently five points from La Liga safety, and so urgently need a further injection of points. Tuesday’s five-goal victory should have restored some belief, though, while they haven’t necessarily lacked in the creative department, generating more than 1xGF in four of six matches since the restart, despite only netting twice. Furthermore, Atletico have been generous more recently, shutting out just four of their previous eleven opponents.
