Auchinleck Talbot Preview – Can cup junior kings Talbot cause a massive shock against top-flight opposition?

Auchinleck Talbot are the dominant force in the Scottish Junior game and won their equivalent of this competition for the 13th time last season. It was a league and cup double for them last season and they’re on course to do similar this time around. On top of that, they’re looking to make further history in the Scottish Cup by beating a Premiership outfit for the first time. Manager Tommy Sloan has been at the club for 19 years, and although they have beaten Championship teams on several occasions – this is the scalp he wants.

One of those wins against Championship opposition came in the last round when they won 1-0 against Hamilton, a match they were fully deserving of winning. Before that, they had seen off fellow Ayrshire junior team Irvine Meadow before a comfortable win away to Preston Athletic.

The win over Hamilton last time out matched their victory at the same stage of the competition back in 2020 when beating Ayr United. There’s no doubt that this is a step-up in quality but they have a formula for winning games against teams at home and they’ll be hard to beat and wont lack for effort.

Due to postponements in their league matches because of weather over the festive and new period, this will be Talbot’s first match since the 18th of December when losing to Kilwinning Rangers. That brought to an end a winning run of seven games.

Hearts Preview – Will Hearts avoid further embarrassment after last season’s cup upset?

Hearts are flying high in the Premiership and stretched their lead in third place following a 2-0 win at home to St Johnstone on Wednesday. It was the perfect return to action for Robbie Neilson’s men following the three week winter break. Two goals from Josh Ginnelley proved to be the difference but the creativity from Barrie McKay was an obvious standout.

Neilson will now turn his side’s attention to the Scottish Cup – a competition they reached the final of in 2020 (losing 3-2 to Celtic) but were humiliated by Brora Rangers last season – losing 2-1 to the non-league side. That will provide extra incentive for Hearts as they approach Saturday’s match, looking to avoid a further embarrassment.

Having only won promotion to the Premiership last season, it does have the makings of a very successful campaign for the Tynecastle club. A third place finish would mean qualification for Europe but they will also feel they are capable of a cup run and perhaps going all the way – something they haven’t done since 2012.

Neilson was also a Scottish Cup winner as a player – scoring a penalty in the shootout win over Gretna back in 2006.

Auchlineck Talbot vs Hearts Betting Advice

It looks a mismatch on paper but that was the case when Hearts travelled north to face Brora last year and they came undone in one of the biggest upsets in the competition’s history. Auchlinleck suffered a heavy defeat when the two clashed at a similar stage three years ago but that match was at Tynecastle and they will hope to be more competitive at a ground where they have had so much success down the years.

With the game being live on television it just adds even more pressure and expectation on to the visitors.

Key Facts –  Auchinleck Talbot vs Hearts Betting Tip

  • Auchinleck Talbot are looking to beat Premiership opposition for the first time
  • Hearts were defeated 2-1 by non-league Brora Rangers in last season’s Scottish Cup
  • The teams met at Tynecastle back in 2019, with Hearts running out comfortable 4-0 winners

Talbot will look to frustrate their visitors and they are defensively sound. I think the value here is to go for a tight encounter and back under 2.5 goals.
