In Bundesliga history, no team has played a specific opponent more often without registering a single victory than Augsburg against Bayer Leverkusen, with the former winless across all twenty meetings in the competition (D7 L13). After trading early goals to earn a 1-1 draw against Union Berlin in the capital, Leverkusen would put on a scoring clinic in a 4-0 win at BayArena over Monchengladbach – a last 16 participant in last season’s Champions League – to record their biggest Bundesliga victory of 2021.
With only two sides enjoying a stronger start to the new campaign, and with neither in action until the Sunday, it is opportunity knocks for new Leverkusen head coach Gerardo Seoane and his charges. Three points inside the WWK Arena, a ground which has served them well over the years having won on six of ten prior visits in the league (D4), would see Leverkusen climb provisionally into first place.
This is far easier said than done, however. For this is a team which has tended to do its best work on home turf. If that 4-0 thrashing of Gladbach was impressive, it is worth noting Die Werkself is currently on an 11-game streak (W1 D4 L6) since last notching more than one goal in an away league game. Moreover, they head to struggling Augsburg having failed to win any of their last six on the road (D3 L3).
