Augsburg Preview – Results dried up for the Fuggerstadter?

A return of one win from their last eight Bundesliga games pales in comparison to that of their Matchday 11 opponents, but is threatening to undermine the club’s nine-year spell in Germany’s top tier all the same. The sight of visiting Schalke, therefore, could be viewed as an early Christmas gift, while Augsburg (W3 D3 L4) could use the points after slipping to within four of the relegation play-off.

On further inspection, though, perhaps this fixture is the last thing needed. Sunday will mark the tenth Bundesliga meeting between the sides here in Bavaria, and yet it has been the visitors who have invariably prospered. Schalke prevailing in two of the past three seasons, winning this fixture 3-2 on Matchday 10 in 2019/20, with Augsburg’s sole triumph occurring five years to the days ago.

On another night, Die Fuggerstadter might have taken something from their previous league outing. That in a 3-1 defeat on the road at Hoffenheim. There wasn’t a great deal between the sides if xG is anything to go by (xG: HOF 1.36 – 0.97 AUG). Results at their WWK Arena have so far been mixed, meanwhile. The undoubted highlight Matchday 2’s 2-0 victory over Dortmund, but it is four points from twelve thereafter (W1 D1 L2).

Schalke Win & Both Teams to Score

Schalke Preview – Royal Blues edging closer to unwanted record?

These are bleak times for those of a Schalke persuasion. A meagre three points through ten matchdays (D3 L7) means they are the eighth side in Bundesliga history to have accrued three or fewer points at this stage, while only one – Hamburg in 2016/17 when finishing 14th – subsequently went on to avoid relegation. Time is therefore rapidly running out if the Royal Blues are to mount a realistic push for survival.

Disconcertingly, there was little in their recent showing that would hint at the sharp improvement they so desperately crave being forthcoming. Aside from the award of a second-half penalty, which Steven Skrzybski failed to convert, Schalke rarely threatened at home to Bayer Leverkusen last Sunday. The final scoreline, 3-0, a fair reflection on what was a comfortable outing at the Veltins-Arena for Die Werkself.

More pressing concerns, however, revolve around their current 26-game winless run (D9 L17), which is now only five shy of the all-time Bundesliga record. Since beating Gladbach 2-0 at home on Matchday 18 of last season (17 Jan), this team have collected 12% of the points available to them. That a dire return, going some way to explaining how they find themselves in such dire straits approaching the end of the Hinrunde.

Augsburg Vs Schalke Betting Advice

Neither side has been pulling up many trees recently. My overriding feeling when two out of sorts teams meet is that the potential for a drawn encounter becomes more prevalent. On this particular occasion though, it could be worthwhile chancing our desperate visitors, on account of their superb recent record in this fixture. Schalke winning here in two of the past three seasons, including in 2019/20 (3-2).

Augsburg Vs Schalke – Key Facts:

  • One win in eight Bundesliga games (W1 D3 L4) for Augsburg following last week’s 3-1 defeat away at Hoffenheim, with five of the last six seeing both teams net.
  • Following a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Leverkusen on Matchday 10, Schalke (D9 L17) are now five games short of the Bundesliga 31-game all-time record without winning.
  • Augsburg are without a win in their last four Bundesliga home games against Schalke, with the latter prevailing here in two of the past three seasons.

The safest option, meanwhile, rests in the goal markets. Both teams have netted in five of Augsburg‘s previous six Bundesliga matches, although only twice in five as hosts, while the same has occurred in three of Schalke‘s last five including both of their recent away outings at Gladbach and Mainz. Furthermore, the last five WWK Arena encounters between the clubs all featured both teams among the goals.
