After the usual opening affair of an Ashes Series Down Under, England needed to pick up the pieces after a heavy loss in Brisbane.

The dismal performance at the Gabba has to be put behind them as Joe Root’s men move on to the second test in Adelaide starting on Thursday.

What can England come up with at the Adelaide Oval? Will they be able to make the most of the day/night affair?

Australia Preview – Aussies on top

It was a convincing win for Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes Series.

Despite a little bit of resistance from England when they were in their second innings, it was all too predictably easy for Australia at the Gabba.

For Ashes cricket betting in the second test, Australia are 8/15 odds for the win* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

As expected, Australia has the pace with the bowling attack to really do some damage.

Australia to keep up positive momentum?

They have lost the massive influence of Josh Hazelwood in that regard who is out with an injury.

Without Hazelwood, their pace bowling line up is left a little bit thin.

New campaign Pat Cummins was in superb form with the ball, taking seven wickets in the opening test.

With Hazelwood on the sidelines, that leaves a fairly clear picture of a 2/1 option on Cummins being the top Australian bowler in the second test* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

Our betting prediction:
David Warner Top AUS Batsman
3/1

* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair)

David Warner is expected to turn up and play after getting smacked around the ribs in the first test.

His batting threat along with that of Steve Smith are crucial for the Australians.

Warner is 3/1 to top score for his country in the second test after posting a 94 in his one innings at the Gabba* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

Back in the 2017 Ashes Series in Australia, there was a day-night fixture in Adelaide.

Australia declared on 442 in their first inning to eventually go on and win the match comfortably by 120 runs.

That’s five wins from five in day-night matches now for Australia in Adelaide. Not great omens for England.

England Preview – Can England respond

All sorts of things were amiss for England in the first test, from team selection to lack of preparation.

Opening batsman Rory Burns was clean bowled facing the first ball of the contest.

Getting skittled out for 147 when opening the batting in the match didn’t help as England were all sea and immediately on the backfoot.

Can they come up with a response?

There is a quote of 11/4 on England to win the second test in Ashes cricket betting* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

They have to come out strong, fast.

England’s Line Up

What England are going to do in their line up is interesting. They held back Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad from playing in the first test.

That’s to manage their workload and to put them into action for the day-night tests in particular where they could take advantage of potentially favourable swing bowling.

But all three of England’s pace bowlers in the first test, Ollie Robinson, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes played very well.

Will England will leave spinner Jack Leach on the sidelines after Australia targeted him hard at the Gabba?

Not helping England’s cause in that first test was some abysmal performances in the field and the returning Ben Stokes getting injured.

England are likely only going to post reasonable scores in these Ashes Tests if Joe Root is at the crease for a long time.

His partnership with Dawid Malan in their second innings at least offered some resistance, Root scoring 89 after a first innings duck.

Joe Root to score for England with the bat is at 13/8* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

Whatever line up they do go with, England will look second best for the contest.

About 12 months ago, India fell 1-0 behind in Australia in a five-match series and that was after getting hammered in the opening match.

But India turned it around to win a historic season. Is England good enough to mount a recovery too?

Australia vs England Betting Advice

Much has been made about England potentially getting a helping hand from the day-night conditions.

However, they have won only one of their four previous such fixtures.

Earlier this year England were tore apart in just two days against India in Ahmedabad.

They look clear underdogs so the Australia to win option at 8/13 is in play* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).

Australia have won all five of their previous day/night matches in Adelaide, the scene of this Second Test.

Key Facts – Australia vs England Betting Tip

  • Australia have won all previous day/night matches in Adelaide
  • Australia are W18 D5 L9 at the Adelaide Oval in previous Ashes matches
  • England have won 1 of 4 previous day/night test matches
  • England have lost 9 of their last 10 Ashes test matches in Australia

Even though Root and Malan offered some second-innings resistance, England still collapsed twice with the bat at the Gabba.

England do have Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad up their sleeve, but Adelaide also receives spin fairly well which means that they may give Jack Leach another turn because they have no one else.

The tourists look unbalanced, lacking batting depth, uncertain with team selection and dreadful in the field.

They are probably going to come up short.

The Pat Cummins Top Australia bowler at 2/1 is the other pick for the game in cricket betting* (odds recorded 18:39 GMT December 14th 2021 at Betfair).
