AZ Alkmaar Preview – Dutch side to find solace at home?

Despite opening their group stage campaign with successive wins over Napoli and Rijeka, the Dutch side approach this penultimate fixture in Group F in a precarious frame of mind. Arne Slot’s side were unable to get the better of Real Sociedad in their subsequent double header, following up a 1-0 loss in Spain with a goalless stalemate here in Alkmaar, meaning AZ (W2 D1 L1) could be eliminated as early as Thursday.

Lose to Napoli and a win elsewhere for Real Sociedad, who are unlikely to slip up at home to Rijeka, and AZ’s participation in this tournament will not extend beyond 2020. A repeat of their smash and grab victory in Naples is urgently required therefore. Midfielder Dani de Wit’s 57th-minute winner ensuring all three points followed last season’s Eredivisie runners-up back to the Netherlands.

The Alkmaar club will be heartened, however, by their exemplary home record across all competitions in 2020/21. That 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad their third clean sheet on the spin, halting a run of three straight victories. While they last lost a competitive fixture inside 90 minutes at AZ Stadion in February (W5 D6). In Europe, meanwhile, they remain unbeaten in eleven at home (W5 D6), winning their previous two against Italian sides.

Napoli Preview – Rare Dutch delight for Partenopei?

An early setback in this group, losing 1-0 at home to AZ Alkmaar first time out, appears to have had a galvanising affect on Napoli (W3 L1). The Partenopei responding with three consecutive victories over Real Sociedad (0-1) and Rijeka (1-2 & 2-0) for a return of nine points and the outright lead in Group F. Should they therefore avenge their Matchday 1 loss, they will have also preserved their immaculate qualifying record.

The Italian side have never failed to make it out of their Europa League group before in four previous participations, doing so as winners of their section in the latter most two – smashing the record for most goals scored (22) in the last of those, in 2015/16. They won’t be setting any records on this particular occasion though, having netted no more than twice, and only six in total, across four group games.

Napoli can, however, achieve qualification with a game to spare. Gennaro Gattuoso’s side will qualify for the round of 32 with a rare win on Thursday. Rare in the sense that their record versus Dutch opposition is extremely poor, boasting one win in seven (W1 D2 L4) and none whatsoever in the Netherlands (D2 L1). Meanwhile, victory in Croatia last week was only their fourth in their past twelve European away games.

AZ Alkmaar Vs Napoli Betting Advice

None of the four fixtures in this group which involved the top three sides – AZ Alkmaar (7 points), Real Sociedad (7) and Napoli (9) – contained more than one goal, with the fixture between Napoli and AZ in Naples producing a 1-0 scoreline in favour of the team from the Netherlands. The Italians have since recorded three wins from three to top the group, and a win in Alkmaar will see them qualify with a game to spare.

AZ Alkmaar Vs Napoli – Key Facts:

  • With no defeat at home since February, and none in their past eleven here in European competition (W5 D6), AZ Alkmaar will be confident of a result on Thursday.
  • Napoli have won each of their last five away matches in the Europa League, but only four of their last twelve on the road overall (Europa League & Champions League).
  • Matchday saw a first ever meeting produced the one goal, with AZ Alkmaar surprise victories in Naples. The Dutch side are seeking a third consecutive home win over Italian opposition.

AZ know they cannot afford to lose or run the risk of a Sociedad victory elsewhere eliminating them on the night. So it will be a delicate balancing act for the hosts, who are unbeaten at home since February and haven’t lost in European competition in eleven matches on their own patch. Their cause is also helped by the fact Napoli have never won in the Netherlands in three attempts.
