Preview: The spoils were that of Union Berlin when these teams met first time around, with the Bundesliga newcomers picking up a 2-0 success on Matchday 12. A similar result would prove very costly to a Monchengladbach side in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Borussia Monchengladbach Preview – Inconsistency hindering top-four aims?

Emphasising that a lot can change within the space of a short week. Borussia Monchengladbach (4th – W16 D5 L7) have gone from wowing us with their rapid start in Frankfurt, when two goals inside seven first-half minutes helped secure a 3-1 success, to producing underwhelming displays against Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen, losing 3-1 at home to the former while only mustering a goalless draw with the latter in Bremen.

When looking at it overall, Gladbach’s total since the resumption can only be viewed in a disappointing light after registering four of nine points. Meanwhile, a slightly superior goal difference on Leverkusen is the only thing keeping Marco Rose’s charges inside the top-four heading into this weekend’s round of Bundesliga action. Victory is, therefore, essential if they wish to avoid losing further ground on Champions league football.

Returning to Borussia-Park should be a big boost even if home advantage is becoming a contention issue since behind closed doors games were introduced. The Foals boast a strong record on their own patch so far this season (W9 D2 L3), scoring at a very healthy rate of more than two a game (2.21 on average) in said matches. Yet a 2-1 success over FC Koln, back in March, represents their sole win in the last four home encounters (W1 D1 L2).

B. Monchengladbach & Both To Score

Union Berlin Preview – Capital club stumbling towards survival?

Falling behind early during Wednesday’s contest with Mainz at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, Union Berlin (13th – W9 D4 L15) would claw their way back into the contest against relegation-threatened opposition by virtue of Marcus Ingvartsen netting his fifth Bundesliga goal of the campaign. The 24-year-old Dane’s free-kick effort squirmed past a helpless – or hopeless, depending on your interpretation of events – visiting ‘keeper to hand the capital club its first point since returning to action.

The hope now, then, is that Union boss Urs Fischer can somehow use the Mainz result as some sort of springboard in the closing stages. It was a solid point in the end, despite failing to utilise ‘home advantage’, earned despite playing with a man less once Robert Andrich was dismissed shortly before half-time. The German midfielder will now serve a suspension as a consequence.

Form-wise, though, the outlook is still rather grim, with no win in five league games (D2 L3). Their last two away outings, meanwhile, have seen them travel to Freiburg (3-1) and, more recently, local rivals Hertha Berlin and ship a combined seven goals in heavy, morale-sapping defeats. So this is certainly not a Union Berlin side in any great shape – though they did triumph in the reverse of this fixture, winning 2-0 in Berlin last November.

Borussia Monchengladbach Vs Union Berlin Betting Advice

Both teams have hit a lull in form lately, with Gladbach failing to win either of their last two contests while Union Berlin remain without a win in the league since February. The visitors may well feel confident, however, having won the meeting between the two in Berlin earlier in the season to make it three wins on the bounce at that particular juncture. Results have markedly declined ever since, though, winning four of sixteen Bundesliga games thereafter.

Monchengladbach Vs Union Berlin Key Facts

  • From winning nine consecutive home matches between September and January, Gladbach have since won of their last four at Borussia-Park (W1 D1 L2).
  • Only Frankfurt have picked up fewer points away from home this season than Union Berlin (W3 D2 L9 away), who are averaging 0.79 points per game on their travels.
  • Last November brought about a first ever top flight meeting between these two clubs, which Union Berlin duly won on home soil, winning 2-0 in Berlin.

The last four home games from Monchengladbach show only one win, however, a couple in particular were very challenging match-ups. This fixture is a lot more favourable, and they can have no excuses should they not prevail. Of their nine wins at Borussia-Park this season only two were accompanied by a clean sheet, meanwhile only one wouldn’t feature 3 or more goals.
