Barcelona held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of this Champions League round of 16 clash, and they’ll now be in their own backyard for this crucial second leg at their Camp Nou where they’ve won a staggering 22 of their last 24 Champions League matches.
Barcelona have re-discovered their mojo, both domestically, and on the european stage as they hold a valuable eight point lead over second placed Atletico Madrid, and perhaps even more significantly, a 15 point lead over rivals, Real Madrid.
The hosts also breezed through the group stages as they were unbeaten in Group D and won the group by a three point margin over Italian giants, Juventus. They’ve also achieved victory by more than one goal in 18 of these 22 wins on home turf, so Chelsea will have their work cut out here I fancy.
Onto Chelsea, and I was a little surprised that The Blues managed to hold a rampant Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, but the real work begins on Wednesday night when Chelsea enter the lions den, with Barcelona more than capable of moving up through the gears.
Chelsea’s recent problems have been well documented and defeats against both of the Manchester clubs, United and City, in the Premier League and both away from home, underline what a massive task lies ahead of the London club against one of the best, if not the best, club teams in the world.
Results away from home in the Champions League have been mixed for the visitors as they’ve registered wins at Schalke, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Atletico Madrid and Qarabag, but have also tasted defeat at Porto, PSG and Roma.
It’s advantage Barcelona here though, and I’m expecting tonight’s hosts to progress through to the last eight in style.
