Preview: The Barcelona players have had to wait nearly a whole week to kick a football in a competitive setting following the postponement of El Clasico. Lionel Messi & Co should be raring to go therefore, but will that necessarily be bad news for visiting Real Valladolid?

Barcelona Preview – Barca to extend impressive winning form?

Rising tensions in the region led to El Clasico being pushed back until a later date, with the biggest fixture in the Spanish calendar now scheduled for December. The fallout from that has meant no competitive football for Barcelona in what is now approaching almost a week, since overcoming Slavia Prague 2-1 in the Czech Republic last Wednesday. Furthermore, it presented others with the opportunity to dislodge them from top spot in the table – which Granada would subsequently manage to do.

Therefore coach Ernesto Valverde and his recharged squad will be playing for the right to regain the lead in La Liga. A current winning run of six matches – four of those domestic and the others in Europe – would imply this is the most probable outcome, with Barca stumbling upon some serious form after some erratic displays initially. They’re also a vastly more consistent outfit on home soil this season.

At their famous Camp Nou, Barcelona are a perfect five from five in all competitions for 2019/20. Real Betis (5-2), Valencia (5-2), Villarreal (2-1) and, more recently, Sevilla (4-0) were all dispatched there in La Liga action, while Inter Milan went down 2-1 in the Champions League despite leading. Victory over Valladolid would be number twelve in a row domestically, not dropping a single point on home turf since drawing with Valencia in early February.

Real Valladolid Preview – Another surprise outcome incoming?

In the knowledge that no visiting team has gained a single point from this fixture so far this season; that their opponents should be fresher for not having played a fixture during the weekend’s round of La Liga action; and only too aware that their previous six trips to the Camp Nou would all end in defeat – is there any genuine hope of Real Valladolid producing a shock result? They are handsome odds to do so.

On the evidence of their recent form, there could be logic to the idea of Sergio Gonzalez’s team springing a surprise. Or, at the very least, making matters interesting. Victory at the weekend over Eibar, winning 2-0 at home, made it no losses incurred in any of their previous five league games (W2 D3). A run given more credence by draws with Atletico Madrid at home and away to Athletic Bilbao.

Then there is their unpredictable away form (W2 D2 L2, GF6 GA7). Two of their three wins would come on the road, at Real Betis (1-2) and Espanyol (0-2), while a late goal saw them earn an unexpected point at Real Madrid (1-1). Yet they were beaten 2-0 away to both Levante and Villarreal. Those were, however, the only occasions this team has failed to score on their travels. In theory, then, Valladolid are capable of ruffling a few feathers.

Barcelona V Real Valladolid Key Facts:

  • Barcelona have won their last six competitive matches, four of those in La Liga.
  • Real Valladolid have not lost any of their previous five league fixtures (W2 D3).
  • Both league meetings last season were won 1-0 by Barcelona.

Betting Summary

Progress has clearly been made in the past month or so. Barcelona‘s current run of six straight victories – four coming in league action – will support this. They’ve also been ruthless at home, winning all four La Liga contests staged there thus far which included some useful scores over some useful teams in Sevilla (4-0), Valencia (5-2) and Villarreal (2-1). Lionel Messi is also growing into the season and seeking to score for the fourth game in a row.

An impressive five games unbeaten (W2 D3) is what Real Valladolid bring with them to the Camp Nou, where they hope to cause a major upset. Just three wins all season is hardly likely to strike fear into their opponents, though this side has picked up more victories on their travels compared with back home and have scored in four of six away encounters – one of those a 1-1 draw at Real Madrid.

Barca have impressively won their last three in La Liga without conceding but have kept one clean sheet all season at home – an incredibly fortuitous shut out against Sevilla, who created numerous opportunities. Meanwhile, Valladolid have enjoyed travelling thus far and although this looks a step too far, they are value to make their illustrious hosts work for any win.
