Barcelona and Sevilla are level on points with each coming into this weekend and involved in what is a congested top six in La Liga. The hosts will be hoping they can make home advantage count on Sunday.

Barcelona Preview – Can Barca kick start what has been a disappointing league campaign to date with an important three points?

Seven games into the new league season and Barcelona have already dropped point in three of those matches including losing twice. To put that into perspective, Ernesto Valverde’s men lost only three times in the league the whole of last season. There is no hiding from how difficult a start it’s been for the current champions and the pressure has been increasing week by week on their head coach. The situation has not been helped any with the absence of Lionel Messi for much of the campaign but there has at least been a few positives to build on in the past week or so. Barca come into this weekend on the back of three straight wins following a come from behind win at home to Inter in the Champions League. How important might that win prove to be in the context of their season?!

The win over Inter was important for a number of reasons not least because it was the first game this season where Messi has started and finished. It was his assist that set up Luis Suarez for his second and the winning goal. The challenge for Valverde is finding a balance between the two South American superstars and Antione Griezmann. If he can accommodate all three then we can expect to see this Barca team improve significantly.

Sevilla Preview – Are Sevilla capable of a surprise and continue what has been an excellent away record?

It was always likely to be a fun season for Sevilla with such a big overhaul of their squad and a new coach at the helm. It’s a club who regularly provide so much entertainment and colour in this league with their performances and style of play. Seven games into the campaign and it looks very much like they are going to be just as enjoyable to watch once again. Critics may point to some of their results and see them as being inconsistent but they simply do not have the resources of the top three to mount anything other than a bid for the top four and qualifying for the Champions League.

Having lost to Real Madrid and Eibar in consecutive weeks (their first losses of the season), the 3-2 win at home to Real Sociedad was very important to keep them in the mix at the top of the table. The late goal from their opponents probably means the score didn’t do them justice either. Somewhat surprisingly that was their first home win of the season. Sevilla’s form on the road has been very impressive with three wins from four thus far.

Key-Facts – Barcelona v Sevilla

  • Barca have struggled in the early part of this season but they have won three in a row and have Messi fit again
  • Sevilla bounced back from two straight defeats to beat Real Sociedad last time out and have won three out of four on their travels
  • Barcelona have conceded in all four of their home game this season but have won all of them

Barcelona v Sevilla Betting Advice

With this being the last game of the weekend both teams will know what a win would do for them in terms of league position. In all honesty, though, the result is the only thing that matters. Valverde will want his team to make it four straight wins and continue their improvement. For Sevilla, any points will be looked on as a good result and continue what has been a good start.

The Nou Camp has not been a kind venue to Sevilla in recent times. The last time they won here was in the Copa Del Rey back in 2010. Their last league win was 17 years ago.

For all Barca’s struggles they have won four out of four at home this season in all competitions. Their last defeat at home in the league was November last year and I don’t see that changing. Barca have conceded in all four of their Nou Camp wins, however, and that should be factored into the selection. A home win with both teams finding the net is the bet.
