Barcelona – Brisk return to winning ways in Catalonia?

Ronaldo Koeman knows his team are playing catch up in La Liga, trailing Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, who are separated on goal difference atop the table, by eight points with the former of those holding a game in hand on the Catalans. It was therefore a brave decision from the Dutchman to elect to start both Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho on the bench for their trip to Valladolid before Christmas.

Barcelona (W7 D3 L4) cruising to a 3-0 victory inside Jose Zorrilla stadium must have felt like vindication for Koeman, that he may have stumbled upon a formation and set of personnel better suited for playing on the road – which, as was the case last term, has been their Achilles heels so far this season. That a third win in four games in La Liga. A 2-2 draw at home to Valencia the only blemish otherwise.

That Valencia result halted a four-game winning sequence at Camp Nou, previously reeling off consecutive victories over Real Betis, Osasuna, Levante and Real Sociedad whilst averaging three goals. The latter against an in-form side who were top of the standings. It leaves Messi & Co. with a home record that still reads positively, registering five wins from seven league outings (W5 D2 L1), losing only to Real Madrid.

Over 3.5 Teams Goals – Barcelona

Eibar – Los Armerous excelling on their travels?

The team from the Basque Country suffered a real blow to their confidence prior to the short Christmas break when losing successive league games for only the second time this season and the first since a run of three back in September. Head coach Jose Luis Mendilibar could have few complaints, though, seeing his side come out comfortably second best on Expected Goals against both Alaves (2-1) and Real Madrid (1-3).

Both aforementioned encounters were not short of goalmouth action, which was actually a departure from the norm. Eibar (W3 D6 L6) had seen none of their previous eight La Liga games feature more than two goals, while just three of their first thirteen fixtures went Over 2.5. Meanwhile, the loss to champions Real was the only occasion this season in which at least four goals were scored.

It is difficult, therefore, to know whether the recent goal glut – by their previous barren standards – is here to stay. However a trip to Camp Nou, where they have shipped an average of four goals across six visits since 2014, all of which resulted in heavy defeats, suggests goals may flow once more. Particularly as Los Armeros tend to travel well, recording all three of their wins in La Liga this term away from home.

Barcelona Vs Eibar Betting Advice

There is zero margin for error for Barcelona, who already find themselves eight points off the summit. They should have no problems at home to Eibar, either. The latter have toiled here on all six prior visits in La Liga, losing all six by a combined score of 24-4 having lost by a resounding five goals to nil in February. However, considering they have fared much better away from home, they could make life difficult on this occasion.

Barcelona vs Eibar – Key Facts:

  • Both teams prefer playing home and away, respectively. Barcelona registering 71% of their points at home (W5 D2 L1) while Eibar have collected 73% of their points when away (W3 D2 L2).
  • Both teams have scored in five of the right La Liga games Barcelona have played at home this season, a similar record to Eibar when they go travelling (BTTS in 5 of 7).
  • All six previous meetings here at Camp Nou between the sides have been won by Barcelona, who have averaged four goals per game in doing so.

Barcelona are clearly short odds, and rightly so, which means we need an angle. And that angle may be a win without keeping a clean sheet. That particular bet has landed only twice when Barca have been at home this season, however, both teams did score in five of the eight said matches. Moreover, Eibar have proven adept travellers thus far, registering three wins and at least a goal in all seven away fixtures.
