Spanish La Liga Betting at Betfair

Barcelona – Back to Camp Nou not the positive it seems?

In a post-Lionel Messi era, wrestling back the Spanish title from Madrid – where the previous two winners, Atletico and Real Madrid, reside – was never going to be an easy task for Ronald Koeman and Barcelona. In the Dutchman’s first full season at the helm, the club finished outside the top two for the first time in thirteen seasons. So the pressure is undoubtedly on for the former Everton and Southampton boss.

So far this term it has been a mixed, and dare I say unconvincing, start. Having opened with a 4-2 victory over Real Sociedad at the Camp Nou – a result that was in the balance right up until the final moments – they then scraped a point in Bilbao. Memphis Depay sparing some Blaugrana blushes with a 75 minute equaliser to open his account in Spain in a 1-1 draw at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao.

With that stalemate, Barca drew for the third game in six in La Liga (W2 L1), ending a disappointing 2020-21 with one league win in four. Returning to Camp Nou should be a huge positive, only that nervy victory over Sociedad on opening weekend represented their sole success on home turf since mid-April. Conceding exactly two goals in four of the last five La Liga home games (W3 D1 L2).

Getafe – Defence compensating for attacking deficiencies?

The relegation zone in La Liga is presently made up exclusively of sides that are still to collect their first point of the new season. Among this unfortunate/hapless trio are Getafe who, after several seasons spent in the top half, were brought back down to earth with a thud last time around as they came home 15th – the first time they finished in the bottom half of La Liga since returning to the top-flight in 2017.

It doesn’t require a genius to pinpoint exactly where it went wrong under Pepe Bordalas last time. No team averaged fewer goals scored (0.74 per game) or failed to score in more games (21 – five more than any other team). Unsurprisingly, these issues have carried over into this season, despite a change of manager. Azulones are yet to score, firing off blanks in six of the last seven La Liga games.

This team’s one saving grace, though, is it’s staunch back line. Getafe shipped 43 goals in 38 games last season – the seventh best rearguard in Spain. They have conceded no more than one goal in each of their last eight league matches. Coincidentally, it was Barcelona who were the last to do so, in a 5-2 trouncing at the Camp Nou in April. But that was with Lionel Messi, scorer of a brace, pulling the strings.

Barcelona Vs Getafe Betting Advice

On paper this should be another home win for Barca to go with the 4-2 success they enjoyed against Real Sociedad at Camp Nou on Matchday 1. Particularly as their next opponents, Getafe, have carried over their dismal form from last season having failed to score in narrow losses to Valencia and Sevilla so far. That makes it no goal scored in six of their last seven La Liga contests going back to last season.

Barcelona Vs Getafe – Key Facts:

  • Whereas Getafe (L2) are still awaiting their first point or goal of the new season, Barca (W1 D1) have scored in both La Liga games so far – but did drop points last time out.
  • Getafe have fired a blank in six of the last seven in La Liga. However, Barcelona conceded twice in four of their past five La Liga home games.
  • In fact, Barcelona have only managed to win one of their last four home matches in La Liga (D1 L2). Though have won each of the last three at home to Getafe (5-2 last season).

If we are to assume Getafe are unlikely to trouble the scoring (though they did score twice in this fixture last season, a 5-2 defeat), then we are relying on Barca for goals. An average of 2.44 goals at home last season suggests they can rack up a similar total to that of their opening run out here. This Getafe defence are made of sterner stuff, though, conceding no more than once in all of their last eight La Liga games.
