Spanish La Liga
Pick: Barcelona To Nil
Odds: 8/11

(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 14 June 2020)

Preview: The champions are on the right path to defend their La Liga crown but recognise any slip-up could be punished by Real Madrid in close pursuit. Nothing less than a win will suffice therefore, as Barcelona prepare to take on Leganes at the Camp Nou.

Barcelona Preview – Messi to orchestrate another victory?

Barely a minute into their first game back and Barcelona (1st – W19 D4 L5) were in front away to Mallorca, wreaking havoc at San Moix on Saturday as a Messi masterclass eased the league leaders to a comfortable 4-0 scoreline. Quique Setien overseeing a seventh victory in nine La Liga games since his arrival in January, as his side continue to lead the way at the summit, two points ahead of Real Madrid in second.

Four goals probably flattered them, however, anything is possible when Messi is on song and pulling the strings. The Argentine seemingly at the heart of everything positive Barca did in Mallorca, grabbing two assists and a goal to take his respective league tallies to 14 and 20 in 2019/20. Both are league-leading figures, and both are all the more impressive bearing in mind how much time was spent on the sidelines.

At such short odds, Barca – who have won 13 of 14 home fixtures so far, scoring more than three goals a game in the process – are expected to rout Leganes. That was how it panned out in January as the Blaugrana hit them for five in the Copa Del Rey at Camp Nou. A certain someone, Messi of course, scored a braced that evening to take his personal tally in four home appearances versus Leganes to eight goals.

Leganes Preview – Toothless visitors pose little threat?

Three points off safety following Saturday’s disappointing home defeat at the hands of Real Valladolid. Nevertheless, it would be foolish to dismiss the chances of Leganes (19th – W5 D8 L15) producing enough positive results in their remaining games to fend off relegation. Particularly with Javier Aguirre at the helm, the vastly experienced Mexican having already done his utmost to steady what was a sinking ship under his predecessor.

Since assuming the reins in November, when the team had lost nine of its opening thirteen matches in La Liga, Aguirre has helped this team earn a respectable 17 points from the 45 that were available. That may not seem much but it’s a significant upgrade on what went before. Leganes losing only six of its fifteen league games under the 61-year-old, who has undoubtedly made this side more difficult to beat.

Only twice have Aguirre’s men, which lost two key attacking personnel during the winter window when Martin Braithwaite and Youssef El-Nesyri departed for Barcelona and Sevilla, been beaten by more than a single goal. The drawback, however, has been a lack of goals, scoring only six across their previous nine La Liga games combined and failing to even score in three of the last four on the road.

Barcelona Vs Leganes Betting Advice

To my dismay, having backed otherwise, Barcelona were sharper than expected, and certainly a great deal more ruthless than they had been prior to the break, when thrashing Mallorca at the weekend. It helped that Lionel Messi was instrumental. Another performance of that ilk could see the league leaders record another big scoreline. Although Leganes, beaten upon the restart by Valladolid, seldom lose by much under their new manager.

Barcelona Vs Leganes – Key Facts

  • League leaders Barca went big in their first game since the resumption, beating Mallorca 4-0 to make it six wins from their last seven La Liga games (W6 L1).
  • Meanwhile, Leganes were frustrated at home by Real Valladolid, who claimed maximum points with a 2-1 victory that leaves Leganes with one win in six (W1 D2 L3).
  • Barca dominate the head-to-head, unsurprisingly, with six wins in seven La Liga meetings, even romping to a 5-0 scoreline in a Copa Del Rey clash at the Camp Nou in January

Barca were hardly the most convincing from a defensive aspect last time out.  They still managed to record another to nil victory however, their eighth of the campaign. With no team netting fewer on their travels than Leganes’ 8 in 13, another To Nil wins could beckon for the La Liga pace-setters.
