Barcelona – Is there any stopping a rampant Blaugrana?

When Xavi Hernandez accepted the role of Barcelona head coach in November, he inherited a team which was floundering. Barca were without a win for four games in La Liga and ninth, six points from the Champions League places and eight adrift of Sevilla in third. On Sunday the Catalans will move into second, usurping the Andalusians in the process, should they make it six league wins on the spin.

It truly has been a remarkable turnaround under their former midfield legend, who recruited shrewdly in the winter. The return has been instantaneous. Ferran Torres has four goals in seven La Liga appearances, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seven in five. Both were signed in January, contributing significantly to Barca’s current 13-game unbeaten league run (W9 D4) that has seen them score 2+ in their last seven games.

Key Stat: Barcelona are enjoying a run of four consecutive La Liga home wins, scoring at least three in victories against Athletico Bilbao (4-0), Atletico Madrid (4-2), Elche (3-2) and Osasuna (4-0).

Sevilla – La Liga’s meanest defence must rise to the occasion?

An inability to convert draws into wins is scuppering all efforts from this Sevilla team to keep La Liga leaders Real Madrid honest in the title race, if it can even be deemed that any more. Julen Lopetegui’s side relinquished further ground before the international break as they drew 0-0 at home to Real Sociedad. Their third drawn encounter in successive league games and seventh in the last nine.

Even their current 15-game unbeaten sequence in La Liga is diminished in its impressiveness by the sheer amount of drawn matches (8). Moreover, only 17th-placed Cadiz have drawn as often in 2021-22 than Los Nervionenses, who could soon find themselves clinging on to a top-four berth if they don’t find a clinical edge soon. Ironically, though, they would probably settle for a share of the points in Catalonia.

Key Stat: Sevilla boast the best defensive record in La Liga this term, conceding at least six fewer than any other team (19 in 29 matches). They have allowed Under 1.5 Goals to be conceded in 14 of their last 15 league fixtures.

Barcelona Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

It is stating the obvious to claim Barcelona have rediscovered their confidence under Xavi, but it is worth repeating just how extraordinarily good they have been in the past few weeks. In winning their past five league games, which includes meetings against the two teams that finished above them last season, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, they’ve racked up 18 goals for the loss of only two.

Barcelona Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • The sides played out a 1-1 draw in Seville last December (one of 12 draws for Sevilla in La Liga this season). Sevilla have now won only two of the pair’s nine previous meetings in all competitions (D3 L4 inside 90 minutes).
  • Barcelona are in frightening form in attack, amassing 18 goals across their five-match winning La Liga run. They have scored multiple times in all of their past seven league games (W6 D1).
  • No team in La Liga is more miserly from a defensive standpoint than Sevilla, though. This has contributed to 72% of their La Liga matches this season going Under 2.5 Goals, which was the case in six of their last seven contents.

Yet this newfound Barca swagger will meet some resistance on Sunday. No team gets even close to Sevilla’s formidable defensive numbers this term, while only Celta Vigo among their past 15 La Liga contests could muster up more than a single goal against Lopetegui’s regimented outfit. Unsurprisingly, six of their last seven league games went Under 2.5 Goals. As did each of their previous seven away from home.

At the odds then, it might be worth opposing what some might view as inevitable: goals.
