Barnsley take on Oxford United as my betting tips open on the first day of the season in League One, with the hosts possessing home advantage at Oakwell this Saturday afternoon.
Barnsley will be seeking a swift return to the Championship following last season’s relegation from the second tier, which was confirmed on the last day of the season when they were handed a heavy 4-1 defeat away at play-off qualifiers, Derby County.
Much has changed at the south Yorkshire club since then; former manager, Jose Morais left following the relegation and has been replaced by German manager, Daniel Stendel, as The Tykes hope that some of the German influence that Huddersfield Town have enjoyed under David Wagner rubs off on them! Look out for striker Kieffer Moore as a potential anytime goalscorer for the home side.
Onto Oxford United, and if last season’s results of their run-in away from home are anything to go by, then The U’s will have their work cut out to get anything from Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.
Oxford lost five of their last six on the road to end their League One campaign on a disappointing note with defeats suffered at AFC Wimbledon, Portsmouth, Shrewsbury Town, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers – but that was a particularly difficult set of away fixtures it must be said!
The visitors ended their season with an away record of 6-5-12 27/34 and finished in 16th place, just six points above the relegation zone, so they’ll be keen to improve upon their fortunes on their travels in this campaign I daresay.
12 of Oxford’s 23 away matches last season ended up over 2.5 goals, and with former QPR striker, Jamie Mackie and Crusaders forward, Gavin Whyte (21 goals last season) joining the club, the visitors should also create a few goalscoring chances.
