Barnsley Preview – Can Barnsley overcome newcomers?
Barnsley avoided relegation from the Championship by the skin of their teeth at the end of last season thanks to crucial back-to-back wins against Nottingham Forest and Brentford which was no mean feat as both of their opponents were chasing play-off and promotion spots respectively.
Barnsley manager, Gerhard Struber, will certainly be hoping that his side can avoid another last-ditch escape from the drop this time around but the early signs aren’t promising as The Tykes have lost both of their opening matches of this new Championship season, losing 1-0 at home to Luton Town before a 2-0 defeat away at Reading last weekend.
However, there’s a couple of glimmers of hope for Barnsley ahead of this clash against Championship newcomers, Coventry City, and those are that the Yorkshire club have lost just four of their last 15 matches at Oakwell along with being unbeaten at home in their last four meetings against the Sky Blues, winning three of these four encounters.
Coventry City Preview – Can Coventry win back-to-back?
It’s been eight years in the making but Coventry City have returned to the Championship for this campaign and although they suffered an opening day 2-1 defeat away from home at Ashton Gate against Bristol City, the Sky Blues quickly bounced back with an entertaining 3-2 home win over QPR, to even things up with a loss and a win.
Coventry didn’t enjoy the best of seasons in their last stint in the second tier and following a poor run-in to that fateful season which saw the visitors fail to win any of their final six matches, the west midlands club were relegated and fell down the divisions to League Two.
Manager, Mark Robins, has done a terrific job though in restoring Coventry to at least the second tier amidst financial troubles and wranglings surrounding Coventry’s Ricoh Arena, but it’s likely to be Coventry’s form on the road which could shape their immediate future; the visitors have played three away matches to date this season, winning 1-0 at MK Dons in the League Cup but then losing their next two at Bristol City in the Championship and a League Cup exit at Gillingham (on penalties).
