Gerhard Struber’s Barnsley take on Nathan Jones’ Luton Town at Oakwell on the opening weekend of the 2020-21 EFL Championship season. Both teams narrowly avoided relegation last term, but the pair could be involved in another fight for survival this season. This promises be a cracker in South Yorkshire, and we have the latest and best betting odds.

Barnsley Preview – Can the Tykes get the win on home turf?

Gerhard Struber’s Barnsley survived on the final day of last season. The Tykes beat Nottingham Forest 1-0 at Oakwell before winning 2-1 at Brentford in the last ever regular Championship fixture at Griffin Park. Those six points proved to be enough.

Oakwell was a fortress when Barnsley won promotion from the 2018-19 EFL League One campaign, but they struggled on their own patch in the Championship last term. In fact, the Yorkshire club picked up just seven home wins, with only Middlesbrough and Birmingham City winning fewer home matches in England’s second tier.

Our betting prediction:
Luton to win 2-1
11/1

Barnsley got their 2020-21 season up and running with a home victory over fellow Championship side Nottingham Forest in the first round of the EFL Cup last weekend. A second-half effort from Cauley Woodrow earned the Tykes a 1-0 cup win. Can Struber’s troops follow that up with a home triumph in the league on Saturday?

Luton Town Preview – Jones’ boys to start with three points?

Nathan Jones was extraordinarily successful at Luton Town before leaving to take over at Stoke City, helping the club to the League One title in 2019. However, after a difficult spell at the bet365 Stadium, Jones returned to Kenilworth Road in May.

Jones’ ultimate ambition was to keep the Hatters in the second tier. Luton won three and drew one of their last four to survive on the final day. Jones’ men were beaten just once, as Town lost one of their last 12 Championship matches last season.

Like Barnsley, Luton also kicked off the new campaign with a Carabao Cup win. The Hatters made light work of former Premier League side Norwich City at Kenilworth Road, with the impressive James Collins helping himself to a hat-trick in the deserved 3-1 EFL Cup victory.

Jones made Luton incredibly hard to beat at the end of last season. A surprise 5-0 home loss to Reading was the only blemish in an otherwise sensational run. Can the Bedfordshire side keep their momentum ticking by taking all three points from this one?

Barnsley vs Luton Town Betting Advice

These two clubs know each other well from their League One days. Last season, Luton had the better of the two meetings in the Championship. Town won 3-1 at Oakwell back in August 2019. The pair then drew 1-1 at Kenilworth Road in July.

Key Facts – Barnsley vs Luton Town Betting Tip

  • Both teams picked up home wins in the EFL Cup last weekend
  • The pair were separated by just two points in last season’s Championship
  • Two of the previous three Barnsley v Luton meetings have ended in draws

Barnsley have not beaten Luton since a League One encounter back in October 2018, while two of the last three meetings have ended all square.

This will surely be a tight and tense fixture between two evenly matched clubs at Oakwell. Both sides finished the 2019-20 season in strong style, but who can start 2020-21 with a bang?

We are backing Jones’ Luton to secure a narrow victory in South Yorkshire on Saturday. There is good value in Town to win by one goal at 4/1.
