Barnsley Preview – Another tough day at the office for the Tykes?
Barnsley have found it tough going in the Championship this season. The Tykes did a fine job to win promotion from League One last term, but they could be back in the third tier for the start of next season. The Yorkshiremen have spent most of their campaign in the bottom three, winning just ten of 42 fixtures.
Oakwell was a fortress last season, but Barnsley have struggled on their own patch in England’s second division. The Tykes have picked up just six home league wins, drawing eight and losing seven of the other 15. However, they have won two of their last four at Oakwell, losing only once on home soil since February.
Gerhard Struber’s side still have dreams of staying in the Championship, but last weekend’s 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Luton Town was not the result that they were hoping for. With Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and Brentford – who are all pushing for promotion – still to come, Barnsley’s days in the second tier could be numbered.
Wigan Athletic Preview – Can the Latics get the points in South Yorkshire?
After losing 3-0 at Brentford in their last away game, Wigan Athletic hit back with a 1-0 home victory over Queens Park Rangers at the DW Stadium in midweek. Athletic are one of the form teams of the Championship. Before defeat at Griffin Park, Paul Cook’s men had taken 19 points from a possible 21.
Cook’ side went on an astounding nine-match undefeated run in the Championship, winning six and drawing three. That superb run has lifted them away from trouble. Wigan are a tough nut to crack at the DW Stadium, while they have picked up five wins on the road. Athletic have won four of their last six away games.
