Preview: Focus turns to Turkey’s Super Lig on Friday for a clash at opposite ends of the league. Istanbul Basaksehir endured a miserable week but are generally strong inside their Fatih Terim Stadium, the venue for this encounter with a Genclerbirligi outfit residing in the bottom half of the table.

Basaksehir Preview – Poor week in an otherwise solid campaign?

This past week has been something of a disaster. From exiting the cup to a team from the third tier – losing on away goals to Kirklarelispor following a 1-1 aggregate draw – to relinquishing a lengthy unbeaten league run which comprised of ten wins and six draws, after finally losing for the first time in five months at Fenerbahce last weekend. Will they get back on track here?

Plenty suggests a positive outcome is to be forthcoming, however. Istanbul Basaksehir (3rd – W10 D6 L3), for starters, are still enjoying a strong season generally. The club remain prominent in the Turkish Super Lig and are still very much within reach of the surprise leaders, sitting four points off Sivasspor in third. Meanwhile, their record at home has been very strong for a long time, winning six of nine (W6 D3) since last losing at the Fatih Terim Stadium back in August.

That latter run includes successive victories recently, emphatic ones at that, dispatching Kasimpasa (5-1) and Yeni Malatyaspor (4-1) with aplomb. However, Okan Buruk and his team have not won three consecutive home games all season, subsequently drawing the very next fixture on home soil on the two previous occasions they have found themselves in this situation.

Basaksehir & Both Teams to Score

Genclerbirligi Preview – So far so good from Glencer?

Survival is the ultimate goal for Genclerbirligi (13th – W5 D6 L8), a club boasting an abundance of experience within the Turkish top tier but only recently returned following a runners-up placement at the end of last season’s Lig.1 term. So, in this respect, the club based in the country’s capital of Ankara can look upon their work so far reasonably satisfied, occupying safe footing as it stands.

Last week’s victory over Gaziantep, winning 1-0 at home courtesy of former Sunderland and West Brom attacker Stephane Sessegnon converting a second-half penalty, moved them up into 13th in the Super Lig standings. Not only are they now six points clear of the relegation zone but a difficult spell has been arrested, having previously collected only five of a possible eighteen points (W1 D2 L3).

Success last time out also came with the added bonus of a rare clean sheet. Only their third since the season got underway in August. Now, to improve upon another shortcoming of theirs: being unable to compete on the road. Gencler (nickname for ‘The Youth’) have lost their last three away encounters, shipping eleven goals in the process. Moreover, they have only managed two such victories all season (W2 D2 L5). Those were also against poor Antalyaspor (0-6) and Kasimpasa (1-2) sides in close proximity to the relegation places.

Betting Summary

This does appear something of a mismatch on paper. One team (Istanbul Basaksehir) are enjoying another strong league campaign in third position while the other (Genclerbirligi) has done well enough to keep itself above the Super Lig danger zone in thirteenth. This will be the second meeting of the season, too, with the first a very closely-fought affair that was only won at the death by Basaksehir who fought back from 1-0 down to score twice inside the final ten minutes.

Basakehir Vs Genclerbirligi – Key Facts:

  • Five of Basaksehir‘s six Super Lig home victories featured three or more goals.
  • Despite losing over half (5 of 9) of their away fixtures thus far, Genclerbirligi still managed to score at least once in all but one away league game in 2019/20.
  • Basaksehir were last beaten at home in this fixture in 2012, winning three of four subsequent meetings.

Away from home so far, Genclerbirligi have succumbed to defeat more often than not (W5 D2 L2) including in each of the most recent three. This does not bode well ahead of making their way to a Basaksehir side with six wins from ten as hosts (W6 D3 L1) this season, winning the last two but also four of the previous five at their Fatih Terium Stadium. Over 2.5 goals delivered in over 70% of their respective matches home/away, so banking on goals accompanying a home win is the selection.
