Basel Preview – Can Basel extend unbeaten record ?
3rd placed Basel won’t be able to make up any ground on the top two clubs in the Swiss Super League on this final day of the domestic top flight season as they trail league leaders, Young Boys, by 12 points and find themselves seven points adrift of 2nd placed St Gallen, but nevertheless, the hosts will be keen to extend their unbeaten run to seven matches on Monday night.
Victories over Young Boys (3-2 at home), Zurich (4-0 at home) and St Gallen (5-0 away) have both been impressive and frustrating as Basel know that they’re more than capable of winning the Super League title but a slump from December to February saw the hosts win just one of seven matches during that lean period.
Basel have since recovered and they hold a six-match unbeaten run at St Jakob-Park too which includes four wins amidst an overall home record of 11-3-3 42/17, while holding an excellent record at home against Luzern, winning their last 10 meetings on the trot.
Luzern Preview – Can Luzern build on Zurich win?
A much-needed 2-1 home win over Zurich last time out in the Swiss top flight spared Luzern’s blushes and also put an end to a six-match sequence without a win in the Super League for Monday evening’s visitors, and they’ll be keen to build upon that result at Basel.
However, this may be easier said than done as Luzern have lost five of their last seven matches overall which includes defeats against Servette, St Gallen, Neuchatel Xamax, Sion and Young boys, leaving Luzern in 5th place and nothing to play for on the final day of the Swiss top flight season.
In addition, Luzern have won just one of their last six matches away from home and have lost their last three matches on the trot within an overall away record of 5-2-10 14/25, so they’ll do well to get anything out of Basel here I fancy.
