The DFB Pokal final takes centre stage in Germany on Saturday evening as Bayern Munich look to retain the trophy they won last year against a dangerous Bayer Leverkusen team.

Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Can Leverkusen cause a massive upset to win only their second ever DFB Pokal?

There’s no doubt the way the Bundesliga ended was disappointing for Bayer Leverkusen who narrowly missed out on the Champions League. Despite looking in control going into the final four games, Leverkusen dropped five points in that run of matches to hand the initiative to Borussia Monchengladbach, eventually finishing fifth and just two points outside the top four.

As strange as it seems, however, Leverkusen’s 2019/20 campaign still has a bit to go with the chance of the winning this competition and also qualifying for the Champions League via their participation in the Europa League which restarts next month.

There is a lot to be positive about the campaign as a whole but Peter Bosz and his players know that they have to have something tangible to take from it for it to be considered a success. There has been a tag of bottlers and underachievers levelled at the club in the past and it’s one they will want to shed.

It’s a long time since Leverkusen were victorious in the DFB Pokal, with their last win coming in 1993. They have been runners-up twice since then, in 2002 and 2009 so it’s fair to say they are not regular participants.

Bayern Munich Preview – Will Bayern retain the cup and keep alive their hopes of a magnificent treble?

Another Bundesliga season is now complete and Bayern Munich have celebrated their eighth league title in a row. Hans Flick will already have forgotten about that and preparing his team for the next potential trophy which is the cup they won in fine style against RB Leipzig last May. The 3-0 win secured Bayern their 19th success in this competition and you will not be surprised to note they are the most successful club in DFB Pokal history.

To put their achievements into some context, the club with the second most wins is Werder Bremen who have won six. It’s just another indication of how dominant Bayern are in German football.

Last weekend’s 4-0 win away to Wolfsburg was Bayern’s 16th straigth win in all competitions. Their route to the final goes back to last August when defeating Energie Cottbus before seeing of Bochum. Since then, it’s been top-flight opposition all the way as they have gotten the better of Hoffenheim, Schalke and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Four of their five wins in their cup run have been by one goal margins which shows that they have been challenged along the way. Flick will not bother if that’s five out of six games come tomorrow, providing they leave with the cup.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

Bayern are massive favourites to record their 20th success in this competition. The fact that their opponents are attempting to win only their second is as good a measure as you can get to determine the difference between both clubs.

The last time the two met in the DFB Pokal was back at the semi-final stage in 2018 when Bayern won 6-2, whilst the most recent meeting between them (just last month) was a 4-2 win for the Bavarians.

Key Facts – Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich Betting Tip

  • The one and only time Bayer Leverkusen have won this competition was back in season 1992/93
  • Bayern Munich won the cup last year following a comprehensive 3-0 win against RB Leipzig
  • The teams met a month ago in a game Bayern were convincing 4-2 winners in the BayArena

It’s very hard to imagine an outcome that doesn’t see Bayern retain the trophy. They have been simply magnificent in the second half of the campaign even account for the three month break. The winning mentality they have is incredible.

Both teams have scored in four of Bayern’s five cup games this season and that for me is the value bet on Saturday.
