Bayer Leverkusen – Die Werkself peaking ahead of crunch fixture?

While this isn’t an altogether new experience for them to be top of the Bundesliga through the first twelve rounds, it is a rare sight all the same. Die Werkself last occupied the summit at this stage of the season in 2009/10 – when they went and drew fixture number thirteen with Bayern Munich. A similar outcome on Saturday, from the very same fixture, would probably be celebrated like a victory behind the scenes.

Unfortunately, a point may not be enough if Peter Bosz expects his team to spend the winter break atop the Bundesliga. RB Leipzig are only a point further back and waiting in the wings should the standout fixture before Christmas end deadlocked. That must surely up the ante for Leverkusen, who boast enough momentum behind them to secure a second home win over Bayern in the past three seasons.

Wednesday’s 4-0 rout of neighbours Koln was their eighth win in nine Bundesliga games – a 0-0 here with Hertha Berlin seemingly a blip – and the sixth time during this spell in which they scored at least three times. A more frightening prospect, however, is the improvements made defensively: three clean sheets in the last four, and only one goal conceded in more than six hours of domestic action.

Bayern Munich – Ruthless Lewandowski masking collective frailties?

Prior to the midweek round of matches, two teams remained unbeaten across the Bundesliga campaign thus far. Bayern Munich (W8 D3 L1) have already accounted for one, becoming the first side to inflict defeat upon Wolfsburg when coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday. Now the record champions have Bayer Leverkusen’s 12-game unbeaten league start in their crosshairs.

A Robert Lewandowski brace ensured no further slip ups during the week as the Polish international became only the third ever player to surpass 250 Bundesliga goals in the process. The 32-year-old also leads the way in the scoring charts this season, his tally of 15 at least five more than a chasing pack headed by an out-of-action Erling Haaland, and has three goals from his previous two encounters with Die Werkself.

Bayern rode their luck at times, though, in that aforementioned clash with Wolfsburg. The latter taking an early lead and missing a number of openings to add to their solitary effort in Munich, who were once more indebted to their irrepressible goal-getter for staving off a third successive Bundesliga draw. On the road, Die Rotten had reeled off four straight victories before a recent 1-1 draw at Union Berlin.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Bayern Munich

First versus second. The rampant machine that is Bayer Leverkusen against the former rampant machine that was Bayern Munich, who have been grinding out results more recently as opposed to pummelling opposition into submission. It is the latter, though, who will feel the psychological edge is theirs. Bayern winning the last two competitive meetings, including the DFB Pokal final in July, 4-2.

Bayer Leverkusen Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Only Bayern Munich (3.08) are averaging more goals per game in the Bundesliga this season than Bayer Leverkusen (2.25), the latter scoring 3 or more in six of the last eight matches.
  • Bayern are scoring considerably fewer goals on their travels, however, with 14 (38%) of their monster 37-goal haul coming away from the Allianz Arena.
  • Each of the past eight meetings across all competitions between the clubs has featured both teams scoring, while only one of those encounters didn’t produce Over 3.5 Goals.

Their recent encounters haven’t all been one sided however. Since the start of last season Leverkusen have prevailed in two of five meetings. More pertinent to us, though, has been the sheer consistency in which goals have been scored in this fixture. Each of the last eight in league and cup producing a minimum of four goals, which has to be the bet here between teams averaging in excess of two goals per game in 2020/21.
