Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Can Leverkusen make it three straight wins in the league?

They may only have won half their games (nine wins from 18 matches) but Leverkusen are in sixth spot and only two points outside the top four which brings with Champions League football next season. It’s one of the quirks of the Bundesliga this season that the battle for the title and European football is so close. Peter Bosz celebrates a year in charge of Bayer this month and will consider it something of a success having finished top four last season.

 

One man who Bayer will hope is rediscovering some form is striker Kevin Volland. His two goals in the 4-1 win away to Paderborn last week were his first since the start November. He has scored 14 in each of the last two Bundesliga campaigns and is halfway to that total at the points.

Bosz will be demanding that his team improve their home form having won just three of their nine games in the league so far. Compare that to six wins on the road and it’s clear to see where improvements are needed.

Having won promotion to the Bundesliga last season Fortuna Dusseldorf were, as is so often the case, looked upon as one of the team’s likely to struggle. With this game marking the halfway point of the season it’s certainly been the case so far. However, they are not cast adrift at the bottom. Fortuna are only three points from safety and will feel they are capable of surviving.

A narrow defeat at home to Werder Bremen was not the ideal start to 2020, though. Werder went above them as a result of that and it’s a home game against another team involved in the battle to avoid the drop where they have taken nothing.

If Fortuna are to stay in the top-flight then they will have to start picking up more points away from home. With five points from a possible 27, no team has picked up fewer away points so far. It’s a big cause of concern for them and their solitary victory on the road came back on the opening day of the season.

Since then, they have lost six of eight and conceded 21 goals in that time. They know travelling to Leverkusen on Sunday that they will have to defend a lot better if they are to end this winless away run.
