Bayer Leverkusen Preview – Can Leverkusen shake off their Champions League disappointment and make progress in this?

It was always going to be a tough ask for Leverkusen to get out a Champions League group that contained Juventus and Atletico Madrid (both of whom have reached two finals in the last decade) and that’s the way it turned out. Bayer gave it a good shot however and were comfortable enough in securing third spot to ensure they continued in European football at least.
Considering Leverkusen last at home to Lokomotiv Moscow in their opening group game they have done well to finish strongly and finish above that opponent. The club also have recent experience of playing in the Europa League reaching this stage last season only to lose out to Krasnodar on penalties. They’ll be hoping to go one better this time around.

Leverkusen are going well domestically, too, and are in with a real chance of qualifying for the Champions League once again through the Bundesliga. They sit in fifth spot at the moment just two points off fourth spot.

Since returning from the winter break Leverkusen have won four out of five league games and have scored 14 goals in that spell. It finally looks as though Peter Bosz’ men have found their goal scoring form after a rather modest first half to the campaign by their own standards.

Porto also have the small matter of a massive battle for the Portuguese league title on their hands as they have been able to narrow the gap to leaders Benfica to just a point. They have won their last four in the Primeira Liga, one of which was against their rivals.

There’s no doubting this is a good point of the season for the club and they will travel to Germany full of confidence that they can get a result which will see them favourites to progress heading into the return match.
