Bayer Leverkusen Preview – No place quite like home for Bayer?

The proverbial brick wall has been hit for Bayer Leverkusen (9th – W4 D2 L2, GF12 GA11), who have now gone their previous three competitive matches without winning – two in Bundesliga and one in the Champions League – following their somewhat harsh defeat in Spain on Tuesday. The team often referred to as ‘Die Werkself’ held out for almost eighty minutes in testing conditions before losing 1-0 away to Atletico Madrid, ultimately paying the price for a lack of spark in the final third.

Meanwhile in the German Bundesliga, last week’s emphatic but deserved 3-0 loss in Frankfurt (xG: FRA 2.80 – 1.69 BAY) made it back-to-back matches without a win for Peter Bosz and his players. That was the third occasion this season Bayer had failed to score in a league fixture, whilst simultaneously conceding more in that one outing than in their previous three combined versus Union Berlin (W2-0), Augsburg (0-3) and RB Leipzig (1-1).

On a more encouraging note, the club are enjoying their best start to a league campaign for six seasons. Furthermore, they are still to suffer defeat at home, recording wins over Paderborn (3-2) and Union Berlin along with draws to Hoffenheim (0-0) and RB Leipzig. In fact, it is seven games without defeat inside their Bay Arena when including results from last season, although goals have been typically in short supply there – only one other ground has averaged fewer goals in the Bundesliga this season.

Werder Bremen Preview – Goal flow to continue on their travels?

The visitors are themselves in something of a rut at the moment. Last week’s 1-1 scoreline at home with Hertha Berlin made it three consecutive draws in league action, while it was also the third straight match in which a lead was earned only to be squandered. In fact, Werder Bremen (12th – W2 D3 L3, GF13 GA17) have scored the opening goal in all four away contests this season – the ‘To Score First and Fail to Win’ market with PaddyPower has obvious appeal therefore, with Bremen available at 7/2.

On the flip side, this team aren’t losing games, even if winning games is proving an obstacle. Their young coach, Florian Kohfeldt, won’t be the slightest bit phased by recent results though. Quite the opposite actually. The stalemate with Hertha Berlin will have been slightly disappointing, but previous results in Dortmund and Frankfurt, which both ended in 2-2 scorelines, were useful outcomes at imposing grounds and against strong opponents.

The downside, however, will be a 2-1 success over newly-promoted Union Berlin remains their one and only road victory in 2019/20 (W1 D2 L1). Yet this is a group of players which has thrived as the visiting team. Playing some excellent counter-attacking football, they have scored precisely two goals on all four outings. Unfortunately, though, this attacking enterprise has seemingly compromised any ability to keep it compact defensively: Bremen are still searching for a first clean sheet of the campaign. Only the current bottom three sides in the league table have conceded more than their 17.

Bayer Leverkusen V Werder Bremen Key Facts:

  • Bayer Leverkusen have not lost a home fixture in the Bundesliga since April (W4 D3).
  • Werder Bremen have scored exactly two goals on each of their four league outings as the visiting team this season (W1 D2 L1).
  • Last season’s league encounters were both won by the away side, with Bremen prevailing by a 3-1 scoreline at the Bay Arena in March.

Betting Summary

As hosts, Bayer Leverkusen remain unbeaten in seven league games (W4 D3). They’ve kept two clean sheets at home this season, however this defensive solidity will be scrutinised in this match-up, facing an opponent which has regularly found the back of the net away from home. Meanwhile, forward Kevin Volland has netted in three of four home Bundesliga matches (13/10 Anytime Scorer with Bet365).

It has already been touched upon briefly but Werder Bremen are a very dangerous travelling side, scoring precisely two goals on each of their four away outings in 2019/20 so far (W1 D2 L1). Recent draws away to Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, which both finished 2-2, were very impressive outcomes and perfectly highlight their credentials on the road. Midfielder Davy Klaassen has two away goals to his name (7/2 Anytime Scorer with Unibet).

The defensive resolve of this Bayer Leverkusen team, as well as the fact their home matches have been surprisingly low on goals this season, deters me from wandering into the goal markets. Bremen do carry a scoring threat however, and their away performances this season make them worthwhile chancing, at a decent price, in a fixture they won 3-1 last season.
