Bayern Munich Preview – Will ‘Die Roten’ celebrate more home success in Der Klassiker?

Sometimes there are outcomes in football so dire that a drastic reaction not only feels inevitable but also appropriate. Niko Kovac handed in his resignation as Bayern Munich (4th – W5 D3 L2, GF25 GA16) head coach following his team’s abject display in last weekend’s 5-1 defeat away to Eintracht Frankfurt, and the club duly accepted. The only real surprise being the timing, ahead of this pivotal meeting versus long-standing rivals Dortmund.

The Bavarians at least warmed up by beating Olympiacos in the Champions League during the week. The victory would also confirm their progression onto the next phase of the competition. Not that it was an entirely convincing performance as two second half goals, the first from Roberto Lewandowski who now has an astonishing 21 for the season from only 17 appearances, sealed a 2-0 win in Munich. The Pole has scored in all ten Bundesliga matches in 2019/20.

With a striker in such red hot form, Bayern always have a chance. I say that because with the way they’ve been defending this season – keeping only two league clean sheets as well conceding more goals (16) than any side currently in the top half of the table – ‘Die Roten’ could have found themselves picking up fewer points than their already modest total of 18, which is only good enough for fourth place at present and some four points worse off than leaders Monchengladbach.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – Can BVB banish away demons?

Having witnessed their main rivals dispatch of a manager following a less than satisfactory start to the Bundesliga campaign, perhaps Borussia Dortmund (2nd – W5 D4 L1, GF23 GA11) will start getting ideas. The rumours of a managerial change have certainly persisted for some time now, with Lucien Favre under increasing pressure to deliver more consistency from a Dortmund squad packed with talent – much of it unfulfilled depending on whom you ask.

Last week’s 3-0 victory over Wolfsburg was very impressive, though, clinically inflicting a first loss of the season on The Wolves. It was, however, only a second league win in six games (W2 D4) for Dortmund and therein lies the problem. Lately, drawing too many games has proved their downfall. Not to mention an inability to win any of the previous four away fixtures – their only away triumph of the season dating right back to 23 August, a 3-1 scoreline against struggling FC Koln.

Dortmund simply must start winning games on their travels if they’re to stay the course in the title race. Meanwhile, the manager could certainly do with a statement victory. Beating their fierce rivals on the road would certainly tick that box. Yet BVB have not departed Munich with maximum points since 2014, losing on their last five such visits. Although, Tuesday’s come-from-behind win over Inter Milan, albeit at home, means they arrive on a high and chasing a third consecutive victory in all competitions.

Bayern Munich Vs Borussia Dortmund Key Facts:

  • Bayern were hammered 5-1 in their latest Bundesliga outing, against Eintracht Frankfurt, but return home where their league record in 2019/20 reads W3 D1 L1.
  • Dortmund ruthlessly dispatched of then-unbeaten Wolfsburg last time out domestically but have, however, only one away win in 2019/20 (W1 D3 L1).
  • The previous five league meetings in Munich were all won by Bayern, who were 5-0 victors in last season’s corresponding fixture.

Betting Summary

There is no Niko Kovac in the Bayern Munich dugout any more. Eintracht Frankfurt seen to him, with last week’s shock 5-1 loss abruptly ending his reign. An interim manager overseen the midweek win over Olympiacos in Bavaria, a game in which Robert Lewandowski continued his sublime scoring streak. Meanwhile, Bayern have a record at home of W3 D1 L1 in the Bundesliga this season but, and perhaps crucially, have won the last five home encounters with Dortmund.

Two impressive wins within the space of a week for Borussia Dortmund. First recording a comfortable 3-0 scoreline at home to previously unbeaten Wolfsburg before an inspired second half performance saw them come from two goals down to beat Inter Milan 3-2 in the Champions League – again at home. When not on home soil, Dortmund have struggled to win matches having not done so in any of their previous four said league fixtures (W1 D3 L1 overall away).

Despite their ongoing struggles to win Bundesliga matches away from home, Borussia Dortmund look too big here. This is a team which has suffered only one league defeat in 2019/20, has multiple avenues for scoring goals and won’t be lacking in confidence following their recent triumphs. Bayern Munich do possess an ominous home record in this fixture. However, a managerial departure, leaky backline, and 50% win ratio in league fixtures this season are all valid reasons to support the visitors, in my humble opinion.
