Preview: Perennial champions Bayern Munich are threatening to run away with another Bundesliga championship, such has been their relentless form of late. Their lead at the summit remains modest, though, at just three points. Any slip-up on Sunday therefore, at home to out-of-sorts FC Augsburg, could prove costly.

Bayern Munich Preview – FCB expected to run riot once more?

A six goal margin of victory in the previous Bundesliga round at the PreZero Arena, home of Hoffenheim, represented the biggest win of the season for Bayern Munich (1st – W16 D4 L4) in terms of scoreline. Such is the power and ruthlessness within their attack, that it wasn’t the first time they had hit six in a league game since the start of the season. That had already been done twice before, although both were 6-1 scorelines versus FSV Mainz and Werder Bremen.

Last week’s win was also their ninth in ten league outings (W9 D1), scoring 36 times throughout this period with only a goalless draw at home to second-placed RB Leipzig briefly knocking them out of their stride. Tuesday’s progress in the DFB-Pokal, after edging out Schalke in Gelsenkirchen to make the final eight, means a domestic double is not out of the question. The scary thing is, few very sides are even troubling them.

With the exception of a 3-2 home win against Paderborn, eight of Bayern’s last nine league victories were by a margin of at least two goals. On four occasions they were at least four goals better than the opposition. They were even missing their leading marksmen last time out in Robert Lewandowski, scorer of 25 in the Bundesliga this season, but still sauntered to another emphatic scoreline.

Augsburg Preview – Dire form signals long 90 minutes ahead?

After a somewhat miraculous middle part of the season, in which they won five of six league games in the months of November and December, FC Augbsurg (13th – W7 D6 L11) have started to fall away once again in a manner not all that dissimilar to how they begun the season. Martin Schmidt’s side opened with one win in ten and, after going down 3-2 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach a week ago, have now won only once in eight (W1 D1 L6).

Even more disconcerting than a lack of wins is the sheer volume of losses that are quickly mounting up. It is now six defeats in eight, which includes each of the previous four staged on the road having lost at RB Leipzig (3-1), Union Berlin (2-0), Eintracht Frankfurt (5-0) and Leverkusen (2-0). All were in that order, meaning Augsburg have conceded 12 times without scoring an away goal, since opening the scoring in Leipzig prior to the winter break.

Yet recent editions of this fixture would suggest a loss, let alone a heavy one, is far from being a foregone conclusion. Back in October when these teams met in their first Bundesliga duel of this term, Augsburg scored twice at their WWK Arena – the latter in the dying embers of the game – to earn a 2-2 draw. Meanwhile last season’s trek to Munich saw them avoid defeat at the Allianz Arena for the first time in five visits, earning a 1-1 draw.

Bayern Munich Vs FC Augsburg Betting Advice

Historically, this has been a high-scoring fixture. Six of the last eight meetings producing at least four goals, with neither of the other two seeing less than a couple. Both teams have scored in all of the previous four, as was also the case in the pair’s first encounter of this season when sharing the spoils following a 2-2 draw at Augsburg WWK Arena.

Bayern Munich Vs FC Augsburg – Key Facts

  • Bayern Munich have dropped two of the last thirty available points (W9 D1), scoring 36 times whilst conceding just six goals.
  • FC Augsburg have failed to secure a result in four consecutive away league games – a fifth successive away defeat on Sunday would equal the club’s longest losing run in the Bundesliga.
  • It is nine head-to-head meetings without a win for FC Augsburg (D2 L7), though they would earn a draw in two of the most recent three – drawing 2-2 in the reverse of this fixture in October.

Their respective forms, however, could not be more contrasting. Bayern Munich winning nine of ten while Augsburg slump from defeat to defeat, losing six of their last eight. Bayern were the better side in that aforementioned 2-2 draw (xG: AUG 1.99 – 3.11 BAY) but were denied victory late in the match. I don’t expect the same level of complacency on this occasion. Backing Bayern to prevail with lots of goals lacks originality but, more often than not, usually delivers.
