Bayern Munich Preview – Meisterschale within touching distance?

Another season. Another all too familiar conclusion. Bayern Munich (1st – W22 D4 L4) might have been forgiven had they lost focus, even if only a little, after beating Dortmund last month to move seven points clear. Instead, further wins over Dusseldorf (5-0) and Leverkusen (2-4) followed, before a gritty 2-1 victory at home to Frankfurt on Wednesday booked a place in next month’s DFB Pokal final.

That is now 15 wins out of 16 in the league for Hansi Flick’s well-oiled machine, which could take some stopping once the Champions League resumes. Bayern could have the egde in that competition after returning to competitive action earlier than anyone else. Not since December, meanwhile, has this team suffered defeat in any competition. That it occurred in this fixture’s reverse, though, losing 3-0 at Borussia-Park, should serve as ample warning.

Last season, Bayern were punished for never getting going, falling two goals behind early on to which they never recovered. Three defeats across five previous league encounters with Gladbach, meaning as formidable as the record champions have been of late, they best be wary. Particularly as there is no Robert Lewandowski this weekend, the prolific Pole out through suspension.

Borussia Monchengladbach Preview – Foals can ill-afford another slip-up?

A bright start initially, powering to an impressive-on-the-eye victory in Frankfurt first time out following the lockdown, has since been something of a struggle. So much so The Foals (4th – W17 D5 L8) almost need a result in Munich, which is a scary prospect, after their advantage in fourth place was whittled down to mere goal difference. Defeat at Allianz Arena would probably come at the cost of their spot in the top-four.

In a league where the top sides can go on a scoring splurge at any given moment, having a brittle lead that comes down to a goal difference of +5 is precarious at best with only four games of the season remaining. Opportunities to make up for any further mistakes or pointless outings are few and far between. So the sight of Leverkusen, in fifth, taking on the Bundesliga’s most out-of-form side, Schalke, this weekend is ominous.

Gladbach have to pull something out of the hat in Munich or risk relying on favours thereafter. There is precedent, however, having ran riot in this same fixture last season when racing into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 16 minutes to win 3-0. It would be a bold call to suggest Marco Rose’s men can achieve something similar with the form Bayern are currently in, especially with Alessane Plea serving a suspension.

Bayern Munich Vs Borussia Monchengladbach Betting Advice

Form is temporary. Bayern Munich, however, are the exception at the moment. Die Roten have been consistent for a while – consistently exceptional – winning 15 of the last 16 Bundesliga games, including the last nine in a row, to all but secure another Meisterschale. Gladbach will certainly be hoping their respective form is temporary, though, after winning one of the last four (W1 D1 L2) and claiming only one point from two recent away outings.

Bayern Munich vs Borussia Monchengladbach – Key Facts

  • Chasing a tenth consecutive league victory, Bayern Munich could clinch the title early with victory on Saturday coupled with Dortmund losing.
  • A top-four finish remains Gladbach‘s objective, however The Foals will drop to fifth unless they can match or better Bayer Leverkusen’s result this weekend.
  • Monchengladbach were the last side to beat Bayern Munich when winning 2-1 at Borussia-Park last December – their third win in five recent league meetings.

Gladbach were, however, the last team to inflict defeat on Hansi Flick and Bayern, achieving the feat back in December. It means The Foals boast possibly the strongest recent record over the champions of anyone, winning three of the last five league meetings including last season’s stunning 3-0 success in Munich. Marco Rose is only too aware his capable side desperately need a result. Gladbach or Draw appeals at 23/10 (Betfair).
