Bayern Munich – Nagelsmann seeking seventh straight success?

Earlier in the week Bayern Munich continued their excellent start to 2021-22 by putting Barcelona firmly to the sword in the Spanish side’s own backyard, running out comprehensive 3-0 winners at Camp Nou on Matchday 1 of this season’s Champions League. Marking a sixth straight victory in all competitions for Julian Nagelsmann’s charges, who could return to the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Six wins on the spin, scoring at least three in each. All since opening their accounts for the season with a 1-1 draw in Gladbach. It’s fair to say the transition from one manager to another, with Hansi Flick making way for the former Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig tactician, has been effortlessly smooth so far. Particularly in the league where they have created a league-high 12.9 xG – at least 2.5 in all four fixtures.

Perhaps the one criticism would be a lack of clean sheets. Focusing exclusively on the Bundesliga, Bayern have already shipped four goals – one apiece in trips to Monchengladbach and RB Leipzig, thrashing last season’s runners-up 4-1 during the previous round, while FC Koln breached their backline twice first time out at the Allianz Arena. A 5-0 rout of Hertha Berlin in Munich their sole shutout of the campaign.

Bochum – Ominous start on Bundesliga return?

Goal difference is now the only thing keeping Bochum, promoted as the champions from the second tier last season, from dropping into the Bundesliga’s relegation spots. This after making it three defeats in four last time out with a 3-1 reverse at home to a previously rock-bottom and winless Hertha Berlin. Clearly in need of a pick-me-up, they are unlikely to find any respite in Munich over the coming weekend.

While not alone in finding this part of the country an unhappy hunting ground, a return of one win in 34 visits (D8 L25) to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga provides for ominous reading ahead of Saturday’s trek to the Allianz Arena. Even more so against a backdrop of successive away league defeats this season. Thomas Reis’ men beaten in slender fashion at Wolfsburg (1-0) and FC Koln (2-1).

Prior to this season, though, Bochum hadn’t sustained back-to-back away defeats throughout the whole of 2021. Furthermore, those three goals conceded in the last round were as many as they had allowed through the first three rounds combined. All three of their points, along with three out of four goals scored, have been back home in North Rhine-Westphalia. Implying a long evening awaits in Munich.

Bayern Munich Vs Bochum Betting Advice

Unsurprisingly, Bayern Munich are extremely short odds to make it four wins from five in the Bundesliga as they look to end Saturday’s action atop the Bundesliga. Under Julian Nagelsmann they have only failed to win one of seven competitive matches, scoring on average 4.4 goals each game and a minimum of three in all six victories. Robert Lewandowski has scored in his last eighteen competitive appearances, meanwhile.

Bayern Munich vs Bochum – Key Facts:

  • It has been a typically strong start to the Bundesliga season from Bayern, with the record champions dropping two points through four rounds (W3 D1).
  • Three points from the first four league games (W1 L3) represents Bochum’s worst start to a Bundesliga season since 2006-07.
  • Bayern Munich have lost one of 34 Bundesliga home games (W25 D8) when facing Bochum. However, each of the last three were via the same scoreline: 3-1.

If there is an area of weakness within this formidable Bayern set up, it is possibly the defensive side of the team. They have conceded in four of seven games so far although do boast shutouts in three of the last four (one was against lower tier opposition). The problem being, Bochum posses the lowest xG in the league. They can, however, claim to have scored in eight of the past nine competitive meetings going back to 2007.
