Preview: The last time Bayern Munich suffered successive league defeats was December 2019. Which is exactly what they are seeking to avoid on Sunday when they take on Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena, eight days on from their shock humbling at the hands of Hoffenheim.

Bayern Munich Preview – One loss constitutes a shock, but is two unthinkable?

Streaks inevitably come to an end. The thing about Bayern Munich was that nobody really envisaged theirs doing so anytime soon, such has been the incredibly high levels this team has played at under Hansi Flick. It did, though, and in emphatic style, thanks to Hoffenheim and their stunning 4-1 victory at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena – a ground Bayern trounced the same opposition 6-0 on their visit there last season.

Defeat last Saturday marked a first in the Bundesliga for Bayern since losing back-to-back matches, at the hands of Leverkusen and Gladbach, in the lead up to Christmas 2019 in a period spanning 21 games. They only failed to win one of those, having reeled off 14 consecutive victories prior to facing Hoffenheim. A defeat that was fully merited based on the chances created by both sides (xG: HOF 2.23 – 1.54 BAY).

Flick opted to start with Robert Lewandowski on the bench last weekend, owing to the fact Bayern were in action less than 72 hours earlier in the UEFA Super Cup – which went to extra-time. The Polish goalscoring supremo would, however, start Wednesday’s German Super Cup, albeit without finding the net before his substitution late on, as The Bavarians returned to winning ways with a gutsy 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund.

Hertha Berlin Preview – Bold showing expected from The Old Lady?

It what was also a turn up for the books, albeit less so, Hertha Berlin were beaten on Matchday 2 as they slumped to a 3-1 home defeat to an Eintracht Frankfurt side which has now won four of its last five away Bundesliga games. As for Hertha, who had begun 2020/21 by thrashing Werder Bremen 4-1 on the road, they were left to rue a fifth league defeat in seven under Bruno Labbadia.

The reason why last week served as something of a surprise was down to the fact this team had shown glimpses of what it might be capable of last season, particularly during post-lockdown. They emerged from that with more defeats than victories (W3 D2 L4), however, a lot of those losses came in tough fixtures (Dortmund, Freiburg, Gladbach & Frankfurt) and were by the slenderest of margins.

In fact, The Old Lady have either avoided defeat or finished on the end of a one-goal margin of defeat in each of their past eleven Bundesliga away games (W5 D3 L3). This would suggest the visitors on this occasion can compete in Munich, where they actually opened their accounts in 2019/20 with a creditable 2-2 draw on Matchday 1 and have managed to avoid losing on two of their most recent three league visits.

Bayern Munich Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

To their credit, Bayern Munich weren’t down for very long. Losing away to Hoffenheim during the latest round of Bundesliga matches was quickly put to bed after beating Borussia Dortmund in the midweek German Super Cup. Although it was a close-run thing, winning an open Der Klassiker 3-2, and hinted at some of their issues from last week, notably in defence, have not suddenly gone away.

Bayern Munich Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts

  • After 21-consecutive Bundesliga games (W20 D1) without incurring defeat, Bayern Munich were finally defeated on Matchday 2 in a 4-1 loss to Hoffenheim.
  • Hertha Berlin have hit the target on at least one occasion in ten of their previous eleven Bundesliga away matches, thumping Werder Bremen 4-1 in their only away encounter of 2020/21 so far.
  • Bayern Munich have won 11 of the past 13 Bundesliga home meetings (W11 D2) with Hertha Berlin, but only one of the most recent two, drawing this same fixture 2-2 last term.

Therefore Hertha Berlin, who have not failed to hit the back of the net in any of their previous eleven Bundesliga away matches (W5 D3 L3), will surely fancy their chances up against a Bayern rearguard not exactly at the peak of its powers right now. Last season’s corresponding fixture produced four goals, equally shared in a 2-2 scoreline, and while I am less confident about a repeat, I do think both teams score here.
