Bayern Munich – Flick’s men firmly in Bundesliga driving seat?

Odds about a ninth consecutive league title at the end of 2020/21 for the country’s record champions shortened further still following the events of last weekend, where defeats for the teams in second and third were compounded by Bayern Munich (W13 D3 L2) scoring four unanswered goals on their visit to Schalke. It means that after 18 games, last season’s treble winners are already seven points in the clear.

Ominously, for those closest in pursuit of Hansi Flick’s charges, Bayern have never before relinquished a lead as big as the one they have now during the second half of a season. And with second hosting third in the Saturday tea-time kick-off, that gap will only widen should Hoffenheim, who did secure an unlikely 2-1 triumph in this fixture last season, become the fourth successive visiting team to succumb at Allianz Arena.

Bayern have now won each of their last three league games, failing to win only away in Gladbach, in a game they led 2-0 in initially, across their last seven fixtures in the competition. They haven’t always been perfect this season – 25 conceded after 18 rounds is testament to this – but going forward Die Roten remain magnificent, with their 53 goals the most any team has posted at this stage since 1985/86.

Hoffenheim – Recent improvements will be put to the test?

Back-to-back 3-0 victories, over struggling duo Hertha Berlin and FC Koln, has gone some way to alleviating the pressure that had been growing around coach Sebastian Hoeness. Those wins were as many as his team had mustered in fourteen prior league outings, climbing seven points clear of the relegation spots as a result, and suggest a timely return to form ahead of the most daunting fixture in the calender.

Not that it has shown lately. In fact, since the start of 2016/17, no Bundesliga side has claimed more points (13) against Bayern Munich than Hoffeinheim, who have managed to avoid losing in five of their last nine league meetings (W4 D1 L4) with the record champions. That includes a 4-1 thrashing of the current league leaders on Matchday 2 of this season, but also a first ever victory in Munich last term.

The last time a team did the double over Bayern in the league were Dortmund and Gladbach, who both did so in 2010/11. Therefore, Hoffenheim (W6 D4 L8) will join an illustrious club should they spring another shock. Three consecutive clean sheets – albeit against three out-of-sorts sides in Bielefeld, Hertha Berlin and FC Koln – stands them in good stead for nullifying the offensive prowess of Lewandowski & Co.

Bayern Munich Vs Hoffenheim Betting Advice

Quite simply this is a fixture like no other for Bayern, having failed to win more often than not across their previous nine Bundesliga encounters with Hoffenheim, who will take enormous belief from some of their recent displays. Not least their 2-1 victory here at Allianz Arena in 2019/20 – one of only two visiting teams to win there that season – but also the 4-1 shellacking of the champions on Matchday 2.

Bayern Munich Vs Hoffenheim – Key Facts:

  • Three consecutive victories coming into Matchday 19 for Bayern Munich, whose 53 goals at this stage is a record-equalling figure in the Bundesliga.
  • With two wins on the spin, Hoffenheim have accrued more Bundesliga wins in their past two matches as in their previous fourteen in the competition combined.
  • Hoffenheim secured their first away win over Bayern last season, doing so at the 12th attempt (D2 L9 previously). They have lost only four of the past nine H2H’s (W4 D1 L4).

After three straight victories, and six in the last seven league games, Bayern will clearly back themselves to avenge the above losses. However, a defence that has conceded in five successive home games could hamper those efforts against an opponent with recent history for crashing the party. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim have scored in all but one of nine away matches and have even shown improved form at the back, too.
