Bayern Munich – Flick’s men creating their own problems this season?

Bundesliga champions. Champions League winners. A DFB Pokal success for good measure. Last year will forever be remembered as the period Bayern Munich swept all before them on their way to completing the club’s second continental treble. That they ended it at the German summit, spending Christmas on top without looking as polished during the first part of the 2020/21 season, is ominous for their rivals.

Hansi Flick has witnessed his team squander points on four occasions so far this term, even losing their second game of the campaign 4-1 at Hoffenheim. An 11-game unbeaten league run was to follow, and while this may not seem an impressive feat by their lofty standards, it was achieved in spite of conceding the game’s opening goal in all of their last seven Bundesliga matches – coming from behind to win four.

Bayern (W9 D3 L1) have also been unusually porous, allowing 19 goals in their 13 Bundesliga outings in 2020/21. That more than any of the current top-six sides. They’ve kept one clean sheet in the last 12 league games, again highlighting how vulnerable the record champions have been thus far. Seven of nine Bundesliga victories were despite conceding, while all nine contained a minimum of three match goals.

Mainz – Siewert presented with unenviable opening assignment?

The club’s hierarchy are pinning their hopes of Bundesliga survival on a second change in the managerial hot seat doing the trick, placing former Huddersfield Town manager Jan Siewert in caretaker charge until a permanent successor can be found. Jan-Moritz Lichte was relieved of his duties after winning one of his eleven league games at the helm. The recent DFB Cup exit to second tier side Bochum his final act.

To say a baptism of fire awaits Siewert, as he gears his new team up for a return to competitive action, is an understatement of the highest proportion. On the previous sixteen occasions Mainz (W1 D3 L9) have faced Bayern in the Bundesliga, the O5ers have won only once – a shock 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena in March 2016 – losing fourteen (W1 D1 L14 vs Bayern). Including each of the last three held in Munich.

Siewert inherits a team only two points better off than winless Schalke, who are rooted to the foot of the standings, and five adrift of automatic safety. They haven’t so much as managed a single goal across their last three fixtures (D1 L2). Moreover, Mainz possess one of the poorest travelling records in the top-flight. Only the aforementioned Royal Blues collecting fewer away points than the Carnival Club (W1 D1 L4).

Bayern Munich Vs Mainz Betting Advice

The thankless task of leading Mainz into the Allianz Arena cauldron has been passed onto Jan Siewert. The former Huddersfield Town manager whose rather uninspiring stint in England makes him a rather, well, uninspiring choice even on a caretaker basis. Speaking of the uninspiring, we briskly move on to Mainz’s record against Bayern, which reads 14 defeats across the previous 16 Bundesliga meetings.

Bayern Munich Vs Mainz – Key Facts:

  • Unbeaten across their last 11 Bundesliga games, Bayern Munich have come from behind to avoid losing in each of their previous seven matches (W4 D3) in league competition.
  • Clean sheets have been scarce for both sides. Bayern keeping out one of their last 11 opponents in the league and Mainz conceding in 14 of the last 15 Bundesliga games.
  • Bayern have won 14 of the last 16 Bundesliga meetings between the clubs, with Mainz‘s sole victory across this period coming at the Allianz Arena in March 2016 (1-2).

Teams could get at Bayern before Christmas, though, with each of their past seven Bundesliga opponents netting the first goal. None of them went on to win, which is testament to their resilience under Hansi Flick. This does, however, enhance our prospects of seeing goals at both ends, as has happened in each of their previous five league victories. Furthermore, two-thirds of their nine (6/9) Bundesliga triumphs also featured four or more goals in the match.
