Preview: A fixture that must evoke nightmares for Belarus, whose 8-0 hammering when these sides met in March was their heaviest ever. Will this rampant Belgium side rack up another scarcely believable scoreline, this time in Kazan?

Belarus – Welsh defeat quashed faint qualifying hopes?

A Gareth Bale hat-trick, featuring a last gap winner, condemned Belarus (W1 L3) to a third successive Group E defeat that leaves them second from bottom in this five team section – above only an Estonian side still searching for their first point. Qualifying for their first ever major tournament would now appear a long shot at best. That is unless they can somehow reverse the 8-0 scoreline sustained in Belgium in March.

Belarus actually led at half-time against Wales, netting two of six qualifying goals in a surprisingly entertaining 3-2 defeat in Kazan. The other four came in the 4-2 win at home to Estonia, meaning all six were netted as hosts – even though the Wales game was played over in Russia. With Belgium conceding in both away qualifiers so far though, grabbing a consolation may prove the limit of Belarusian ambitions.

Key Stat: Belarus have scored in seven of their last eight home games (W3 D1 L4), scoring all six goals so far in qualifying when playing as the designated hosts.

Belgium – Red Devils in imperious form?

FIFA’s number one ranked side have breathing space atop Group E, after claiming back-to-back three-goal margin victories inside three days over Estonia (2-5) and the Czech Republic (3-0). The latter remain their nearest pursuers, now six points further back from a Belgian (W4 D1) team seeking to preserve a 25-game undefeated streak in World Cup qualifiers (D21 D4) since losing 2-0 to Estonia in October 2009.

Considering they racked up eight goals in an 8-0 mauling of this same opposition last March, there appears very little likelihood of their run being comprised in Kazan. That outing accounted for 40 per cent of their 20 qualifying goals so far, netting three or more in four of five outings and at least two more than any other European team. Meanwhile Romelu Lukaku is up to three goals during this international break.

Key Stat: All four Belgian victories in 2022 World Cup qualifying seen them score at least three, while Romelu Lukaku scored in each of the three qualifiers he started.

Belarus Vs Belgium Betting Advice

The last time these sides met, which was in Belgium back in March, Roberto Martinez’s side inflicted the heaviest defeat in Belarus’ history. An 8-0 demolition. And that was without Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku playing any part. Only the former is set to feature in this, although he did find the target in the convincing 3-0 win over the Czech Republic last time.

Belarus Vs Belgium – Key Facts:

  • 89-ranked Belarus (W1 L3) are coming off three successive defeats, all by a single goal. They sit second bottom of Group E, ten points adrift of leaders Belgium (W4 D1).
  • All four of Belgium’s wins in this qualifying campaign saw their games featured three or more goals. Roberto Martinez’s team are yet to keep an away clean sheet.
  • Belarus retain a positive scoring trend when playing as hosts, finding the opposing team’s net in seven of the last eight such fixtures (W3 D1 L4).

That spells big trouble for the hosts, who conceded three in defeat to Wales here on Saturday. Belgium are as short as 8/15 to win with Over 2.5 Goals in the match, a bet which landed in all four qualifying matches they ended up winning in Group E. Belarus do boast a handy record as hosts, though, netting in seven of their last eight said fixtures. Moreover, Belgium did concede twice in Estonia on Thursday.
