Preview: Early Group C3 leaders Kazakhstan can extend their advantage with victory over Belarus on Friday. The fixture is set to be staged on neutral territory, with the Stadion Karadorde in Serbia making for a less intimidating setting for the visitors in their bid to maintain their 100% start in this season’s UEFA Nations League.

Belarus – Lack of home support already having impact?

Having come close to promotion in 2020, when pushed into second place after defeat to Albania in their final group game, Belarus came into this season’s competition harbouring genuine aspirations of making the step up to League B. Instead they begun a second successive campaign in the third tier with a whimper. Picking up one point from games against Slovakia (1-0 loss) and Azerbaijan (0-0 draw).

This fixture will once again be played at the Stadion Karadorde in Novi Sad, as punishment from UEFA for their involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A sparse crowd watched on last time. This lack of support essentially negates all home advantage for Belarus, who, after nine losses in 13 games (W3 D1), failing to score in seven, could certainly do with some rousing support to lift their beleaguered side.

Key Stat: There have been only two goals across Belarus’ last three matches (W1 D1 L1), while their recent 0-0 draw versus Azerbaijan marked a fifth game in a row without both teams scoring.

Kazakhstan – Group leaders with the early momentum?

Aslan Darabayev’s first international goal decided matters on Matchday 2 as Kazakhstan produced a huge underdog victory to beat Slovakia 1-0 on the road. That followed their clinical performance at home to Azerbaijan, scoring twice in the second half after withstanding plenty of early pressure from the visitors. They will now look to continue their momentum and preserve a three point lead atop Group C3.

Bookmakers are clearly unconvinced about a third consecutive group win materialising though. This in spite of not only their early success – they were 2/1 and 10/1 for their wins against Azerbaijan and Slovakia – but also current form. It is four wins and just two conceded in their last five matches (L1) since a chastening night in Paris last November, when beaten 8-0 by World Cup holders France in World Cup qualification.

Key Stat: Having been without a win for eight straight away games (D3 L5), Kazakhstan have since won back-to-back matches on the road against Moldova and Slovakia.

Belarus Vs Kazakhstan Betting Advice

Perhaps it is reactionary from me, but I am surprised Kazakhstan aren’t a few ticks shorter than their current market line. The visitors have started the campaign in superb form but are available around the 2/1 mark to win what is essentially a game played at a neutral venue, against opponents who are playing amidst the backdrop of UEFA sanctions and whose recent form reads nine defeats from thirteen internationals.

Belarus Vs Kazakhstan – Key Facts:

  • The nations have met five times previously, with Belarus unbeaten thus far having won four – including both meetings during the last Nations League campaign – of these contests.
  • It is Kazakhstan, however, who have made the stronger start in Group C3. They top the group after a home win against Azerbaijan and shock victory in Slovakia.
  • Kazakhstan have now won four of their last five matches, three being ‘to nil’. Belarus, by some contrast, have lost nine of their last 13 fixtures, failing to score in seven.

A run of eight successive away matches without winning prior to victories over Moldova and Slovakia – the latter as a massive underdog – probably has something to do with Kazakhstan’s match odds. They were also fortunate in their opening two fixtures; Azerbaijan created enough chances while Slovakia hit the woodwork twice. Even so, winning matches breeds confidence and Kazakhstan boast four in their last five.
