Benfica – Long unbeaten home run on the line?

There is arguably no task more daunting in world football right now than trying to stop the juggernaut that is Bayern Munich. It is one Benfica know all too well, though, having gone all ten previous meetings between the sides without registering a win (D3 L7). Jorge Jesus and his team will be bullish ahead of this latest attempt, meanwhile, on the back of some impressive form domestically but also in Europe.

Perched atop Portugal’s Primeira Liga with seven wins out of eight, The Eagles are also handily placed in Group E. A goalless draw in Ukraine with Dynamo Kiev preceded the headline-stealing 3-0 victory over Barcelona in Lisbon, putting them second in the group, behind only Wednesday’s opponents. The latter result extended the club’s unbeaten home run in European competitions to nine, winning each of the last four.

Key Stat: Just one team has managed to record an away win over Benfica in their last fourteen Champions League matches in Portugal – though that was to German opponents, losing 2-1 to RB Leipzig in 2019.

Bayern Munich – Rampant Die Rotten big favourites in Lisbon?

Only Barcelona, against whom they eased to a 3-0 victory at the Camp Nou on Matchday 1, have finished top of their group on more occasions than the seventeen of Bayern Munich. That gap looks set to close, though, the 31-time record German champions needing little time to assert their authority on Group E, scoring eight unanswered goals thus far ahead of the visit to Lisbon.

Ominously for their opponents, Julian Nagelsmann’s side warmed up with a 5-1 dismantling of a Bayer Leverkusen team that started the previous round in Germany top of the standings. It means all seven victories in league and Europe this term saw them score a minimum of three. Moreover, the last host to get the better of them in this competition was PSG in 2017 – going 19 subsequent away games unbeaten (W15 D4).

Key Stat: Last season’s 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid – a game in which they weren’t at full strength having already qualified for the latter stages – is the only game in their past 14 away from home in the Champions League they didn’t win.

Benfica Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

For many, a trip to Lisbon to tackle an in-form Benfica – who seldom lose on their own patch in Europe, having not done so in their last nine European home games (W7 D2) – would be fraught with danger. Not so for Bayern Munich, at least not according to the bookmakers who all have them as overwhelming favourites to make it three wins from three in Group E. Having yet to even concede, let alone drop points.

Benfica Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Both these sides have made unbeaten starts in this season’s tournament; Benfica collecting four points to the six of Bayern, who are still to concede.
  • Benfica are out to protect a nine-match unbeaten run at home in European competition against a Bayern team unbeaten in its last 19 Champions League away games.
  • It is the German side holding the historical upper hand, however, winning seven and losing none of the pair’s ten prior meetings.

Benfica are undoubtedly in the sort of form (one loss in 15 in all competitions this season) that might hint at an upset materialising. Even so, this remains a monumentally tough ask. Their record versus Bayern isn’t encouraging either (D3 L7). Assuming that remains the case, backing a high-scoring win for the Germans appears the way to go with all seven of their wins in league and Europe this season seeing Over 2.5 Goals.
