Preview: A first Turkish Super Lig title since 2016/17 is becoming a real possibility for Besiktas who, with eight games left to play, are in control of their own destiny holding a four point lead atop the standings. However, can a resurgent Ankaragucu do themselves, as well as the other title race protagonists, a favour at Vodafone Park?

Besiktas – Leaking goals but still collecting maximum points?

The Black Eagles (W22 D4 L6) are closing in on the club’s first Super Lig title in four seasons after consolidating their four point lead atop Turkey’s top tier in thrilling fashion last time. In what probably should have been a more straightforward assignment, the league leaders were pegged back twice before the half-time interval at second-from-bottom Erzurum BB. A more measured second-half display, however, ensuring a 4-2 success.

Sergen Yalcin’s side seem to be growing more nervous, though, the closer the finishing line nears. A run of eight wins from their last ten Super Lig fixtures would suggest this is utter nonsense, however, it is now one clean sheet in six (W4 D1 L1) having also dropped five points either side of April. A 1-1 draw with second place Fenerbahce preceding a shock 1-0 loss at relegation-threatened Kasimpasa.

The slump didn’t last long though, with last week’s exciting encounter a continuation of the fine attacking display which seen them thrash a decent Alanyaspor side still in the reckoning for European qualification 3-0 here at Vodafone Park. That a ninth win of the season without conceding at home. A statistic that only strengthens the belief nerves are beginning to take a toll as a first league title since 2016/17 grows nearer.

Ankaragucu – Late season recovery in full swing?

The resurgence of Ankaragucu (W10 D6 L16) late into the season is showing no signs of abating. Last Sunday’s victory over struggling Genclerbirligi, with all the goals in a 2-1 triumph coming in the second half, made it four wins on the spin at their Eryaman Stadium in Ankara and five in their last seven Super Lig outings. This after enduring one win in ten matches from early January through to the end of February.

Despite this sensational turnaround, AG are by no means free from the threat of relegation. Now three points clear of danger, their recent form only serves to highlight the perilous situation they were once in prior to a 2-1 win at home to 2018/19 champions, Galatasaray, at the start of March. When including those three points, Hikmet Karaman’s team have picked up 16 of the last 21 available.

It shouldn’t go unnoticed, though, that this spirited form stems from their performances back home. Away from home Ankaragucu still possess the second-worst record of all teams in the Turkish Super Lig. A 1-0 scoreline at Karagumurk, a side holding their own in the top half, their only away victory in nine attempts so far in 2021 (W1 D2 L6) – though they have at least found the net in each of the last four.

Besiktas Vs Ankaragucu Betting Advice

It took a goal from a centre-halve to split these teams earlier on in the season, as World Cup runner-up Domagoj Vida netted on the hour to wrap up a 1-0 victory in Ankara for Besiktas. The Black Eagles would go on to record another 14 wins across their subsequent 19 fixtures to now lead the Super Lig by four points, ahead of Fenerbahce who are away to reigning champions Istanbul Basaksehir on Sunday.

Besiktas Vs Ankaragucu – Key Facts:

  • Ankaragucu have not tasted victory away to Besiktas in any competition since a 2-1 win in February 2002, losing on all thirteen subsequent visits.
  • Each of the last four meetings inside Vodafone Park resulted in Besiktas winning despite not keeping their clean sheet intact.
  • Besiktas arrive having won their last two Super Lig fixtures, as well as eight of the last ten (D1 L1). Ankragucu boast five wins in seven (D1 L1) but only one in nine away (D2 L6).

All but three of twelve home wins garnered by Besiktas this term were with their defence not being breached, making the 11/8 with BetVictor on a home win to nil appear reasonable. However, it is now one clean sheet in six for the current league leaders. Meanwhile, Ankaragucu are in inspired form right now, with five wins in seven and at least one goal scored in their previous four away encounters.
