Arminia Bielefeld – Blunt offensive hampering survival efforts?

Goals continue to arrive at a premium when Arminia Bielefeld (W3 D1 L10) take to the field. A league low 33 were scored across their 14 Bundesliga games this term, averaging out at 2.36 a game although that figure has come down further still following three consecutive 1-0 scorelines. The latest a 1-0 home reverse at the hands of Gladbach, who gleefully secured their first league win since November.

Meanwhile, Bielefeld have managed only one goal and one win across their past four Bundesliga contests (W1 L3), registering what has almost become the standard victory for any side facing rock-bottom Schalke when prevailing 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen. It is also worth noting that all three triumphs since earning promotion have come against the current bottom-four sides (FC Koln, Mainz & Schalke).

Opta tells us that only at one stage before, in 1980/81, have Die Blauen (The Blues) had fewer points after their first 14 Bundesliga games than they do now (10). While their nine goals scored is their worst ever tally at this stage. On top of this, Coach Uwe Neuhaus has seen his team toil at their Bielefelder Alm ground thus far, recording two wins from seven such fixtures (W2 L5) and losing five of the past six.

Hertha Berlin – Old Lady to make it successive wins in New Year?

The Berliners made the perfect start to the New Year, at the expense of Schalke who not only remain bottom but are now one shy of equalling the longest winless run in the German top-flight, after a relatively straightforward 3-0 success at the Olympic Stadium. That win made it one loss in six league games and saw them rise to 12th place, some six points clear of Arminia Bielefeld and the relegation play-off.

A second quick-fire victory on Sunday would therefore place further daylight between them and the bottom-three, yet results this season show Hertha Berlin (W4 D4 L6) have had no success stringing multiple victories together. Two of their three previous triumphs, meanwhile, were followed by losing efforts. So despite the comfortable nature of their latest win, this is a team who can take nothing for granted.

The Old Lady have also found it tough going on the road lately. Since collecting six points and netting an average of 2.75 goals across their opening four away fixtures which saw them go to Augsburg, Bayern, Bremen, RB Leipzig and score in each, the capital club have registered two of a possible nine points whilst finding the back of the net only twice against Gladbach, Leverkusen and Freiburg.

Arminia Bielefeld Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

Recent results between the clubs show Arminia Bielefeld failing to win their last seven competitive encounters (D3 L4) with Hertha Berlin, who, rather paradoxically, are without a Bundesliga away win in this fixture across their five previous attempts (D2 L3). Make of that what you will. I’m still inclined to side with the visitors, who were the only one of these sides last weekend to get off to a winning start in 2021.

Arminia Bielefeld Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts:

  • Only bottom side Schalke have netted less goals across the German Bundesliga season so far than Arminia Bielefeld (9), who have lost five of their past six matches at home.
  • With 13 goals scored through their first seven away league assignments, only once before – in 1976/77 – have Hertha Berlin had more away goals at this stage.
  • In the Bundesliga, Arminia Bielefeld are currently five-games unbeaten at home against Hertha Berlin. The latter, however, won the most recent meeting here: a 2-1 victory in the 2015 DFB Pokal.

Bielefeld losing 1-0 at home to Gladbach last time means they have now lost five of their last six Bundesliga home games. Goals continue to be a big problem, too: their overall tally of nine is the second-fewest in the Bundesliga, averaging less than one-a-game at home (0.71) where they have been beaten to nil in each of the last two. Hertha, meanwhile, boast a better scoring average on their travels (1.86) than they do at home.
