Birmingham City unveiled their fifth manager in the space of 15 months yesterday as Garry Monk was appointed manager of the struggling west midlands outfit, and he’s tasked to keep The Blues in the Championship following the departure of Steve Cotterill.

A 2-1 defeat away at Nottingham Forest sealed Cotterill’s fate, and Birmingham City’s owners swiftly moved to capture the services of Monk who had had previous spells at the helm with Swansea City, Leeds United and Middlesbrough, and from a personal perspective, being a Birmingham City fan, this looks a positive move at last from the owners.

It’s against Middlesbrough this evening that Monk will be in charge of his first game for Blues, who will be desperate to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat in the Championship as they once again find themselves fighting against relegation.

Middlesbrough moved up to seventh place in the Championship last Friday night when they saw off Leeds United 3-0 at the Riverside Stadium, and Boro now seem to be heading in the right direction under manager, Tony Pulis, as his side are now just two points adrift of the play-off pack ahead of their trip to the west midlands this evening.

However, most of Middlesbrough’s success this season has been achieved at the Riverside Stadium where they’ve captured 10 of their 16 wins, while their form away from home has left a lot to be desired with Boro’s away record standing at a disappointing  6-4-7  26/21.

In addition, and to emphasise this, Middlesbrough are without a win from their last three away trips as they’ve suffered back-to-back defeats at Norwich City and Cardiff City, along with being held to a point at Sunderland.

This gives Birmingham City a glimmer of hope for this clash, and with new boss Garry Monk in charge of his first game here, this could give the hosts a much-needed boost. Monk would also love to put one over his former club too!
