Birmingham City Preview – Can Birmingham break out of rut?
Birmingham City caretaker-manager, Steve Spooner, didn’t get off to best of starts as Birmingham City slumped to a fourth defeat on the trot in the Championship when they were dealt a 2-0 defeat away from home at Stoke City on the weekend.
This disappointing loss followed previous defeats to Huddersfield Town, Fulham and Swansea City and has left The Blues in 18th place on the Championship table and just four points above the relegation zone with three matches of the season remaining.
The hosts are also three points above tonight’s visitors, Charlton Athletic, but this has now become a ‘must-win’ game for Birmingham against one of their relegation rivals and they’ll be desperate to end a dismal six-match run without a win at St Andrews here.
The prospect of goals here looks likely though as each if Birmingham’s last five home matches have resulted in over 2.5 goals and the hosts need to produce a reaction from their disappointing performance against Stoke City.
Charlton Athletic Preview – Can Bowyer get one over former club?
Former Birmingham City player, Lee Bowyer, will bring his Charlton Athletic side to St Andrews on Wednesday night also looking to avoid another defeat in the Championship following a narrow 1-0 defeat at home at The Valley to Reading on the weekend which became The Addicks’s third defeat on the trot.
Previous losses to London rivals, Millwall and Brentford, have done little to boost Charlton’s bid to escape the drop and the visitors are currently perched precariously one league place and one point above the relegation zone ahead of this tough trip to the west midlands.
With just two wins out of their last 18 matches on their travels, an away win here looks fairly unlikely but goals look favourable as 11 of Charlton’s last 18 away matches have produced three goals or more and they’ll also be desperate for three points on Wednesday night too.
Bowyer has been heavily linked to the vacant Birmingham City post and will be keen to make a good impression with Charlton here.
