Birmingham City Vs West Bromwich Albion Live Stats & Betting Odds

Birmingham City Preview – Lack of goals remains an issue?

The Blues approached their midweek encounter with QPR in reasonable form with no losses incurred in any of the previous four Championship fixtures, winning 3-2 away at Reading the previous weekend to complement three consecutive 1-1 draws with Huddersfield, Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday. This four-game unbeaten streak was to end on Wednesday, though, after Birmingham City (14th – W8 D4 L8, GF2 GA26) suffered a deserved 2-0 defeat at St Andrew’s to QPR.

As eye-catching as that previous unbeaten run was, this is now a team which has managed to record only one win in the last seven (W1 D3 L3). Their sole success in this period actually coming last weekend when they scored more than once in a game for the first time in over a month away to Reading (2-3). At home, though, it is no win since the end of October (D1 L2) scoring only once across fixtures with Fulham (0-1), Millwall (1-1) and QPR (0-2).

It was another disappointing performance in attack for Pep Clotet’s men last time out, failing to create enough chances (xG: BIR 0.91 – 1.26 QPR) against a QPR team that has leaked goals throughout and had previously shut out one opponent all season prior. For Birmingham, they have now failed to score at all on seven separate occasions, and the fourteenth in which no more than one was netted. Hardly encouraging statistics ahead of facing a West Brom team which has won five of its last six away match-ups without conceding.

West Brom Win To Nil

West Bromwich Albion Preview – Refreshed Baggies to bounce back?

Football managers often find themselves under immense pressure during the festive period of a season due to the sheer workload placed on their teams. On this basis then I could understand the thought process behind West Brom (2nd – W13 D6 L1, GF41 GA20) manager Slaven Bilic’s decision to start several of his best players on the bench for Wednesday’s ultimately disappointing draw away to struggling Wigan. It is bold but hardly innovative; most top coaches do it, and they look shrewd when it works but foolish when it doesn’t.

After a rotated Baggies side without three key offensive components – Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana and Hal Robson-Kanu were all named among the substitutes initially – laboured to a fortuitous point at The DW Stadium (xG: 2.04 – 0.59 WBA), we should be able to rest assured that Bilic won’t make the same move/mistake twice. At least not in such a short space of time, and not after it cost them top spot in the league, with Leeds now marginally ahead on goal difference.

But have those midweek tribulations affected their momentum and harmony? After all this was a team on a roll prior to that poor display last time out, racking up six consecutive league victories including a 5-1 hammering of play-off hopefuls Swansea at The Hawthorns last weekend. They had also won five straight away games, all without conceding a single goal. So there was plenty lost in Wigan, despite the scoreline reading as a draw.

Birmingham City Vs West Bromwich Albion – Key Facts:

  • Across their previous three home games, Birmingham City have managed to score only once and were beaten to nil by Fulham and QPR.
  • Before drawing 1-1 at Wigan in midweek, West Brom had negotiated five successive away matches without conceding, winning all five.
  • West Brom are unbeaten in five (W4 D1) against Birmingham City in the league, but were held to a 1-1 draw at St Andrew’s in 2018-19.

Betting Summary

Slipping to second in the table following their score-draw at Wigan, there is now every prospect of a fired up West Brom (10/11 Unibet) taking to the pitch at St Andrew’s for this weekend’s early kick-off. Key players will return, some fresher than others, and as such The Baggies will rate their chances of making an immediate return to winning ways having won six straight matches prior. It helps, of course, that their opponents are out of form, with Birmingham (13/4 Coral) losing for the first time in five on Wednesday but winning only once in the last seven.

Birmingham have been blunt for much of this season but particularly of late, and especially at home. West Brom, meanwhile, have won five of the previous six away encounters without even conceding and should be in determined mood. Therefore the visitors, who are chasing automatic promotion and boast the most potent attack in the division, scoring eight more than the next-best, simply have to be the selection here.
