Blackburn Rovers Preview – Can Mowbray’s men show their superiority to progress into the next round?

Tony Mowbray has been in charge of Blackburn since the start of 2017 and he has been able to consolidate them in the Championship having won promotion in 2018. There was even talk that Rovers could make the playoffs at the turn of this year but ultimately they fell short, missing out by seven points. An 11th placed finish is a decent achievement considering their resources, however, and gives them something to build on heading into the new league season starting next month,

One of their key players, Bradley Dack, is also set to hand Mowbray a boost for the start of the new season as he returns to fitness after six months out.

Rovers record in the EFL Cup in recent times is decent without being anything special. They have been able to get past the first round in each of the past four years but not been able to really go deep into the competition. The last time they went beyond the last 16 was in 2011 when reaching the quarter-finals having made the last four two years earlier.

Either of those runs is some way off just now but they will feel a good showing is long overdue.

Doncaster Preview – Are Doncaster good enough to cause an upset against Championship opponents?

Doncaster were one of several teams left frustrated in how the League One team had to be concluded as they were in the fringes of the playoffs. Darren Moore’s team also had two games in hand and were just six points adrift of sixth place. Moore will attempt to use that as an incentive to motivate his players for the impending league campaign. Doncaster have proven they are capable of challenging for the top six and should be thereabouts once again.

It’s a team very much built in the mould of their manager as they had an excellent defensive record, conceding the third fewest in the division.

How Doncaster view this competition in terms of their priorities is questionable due to how small their squad is at the moment. The club have lost 13 players since the end of last season and despite bringing in some replacements they are still short. Ben Whiteman has been strongly linked with a move to Blackburn so it will be interesting to see if he faces the club who have had several bids rejected for his services.

A first round EFL Cup tie brings back some bad memories for Moore as he seen his team crash out to Grimsby last year in one of his first games in charge.

Blackburn Rovers vs Doncaster Betting Advice

First time out always makes the outcome that bit more predictable and even more so when it comes to cup games. Blackburn are clearly the better team but it’s going to be a good test for them against a very decent visiting side. The teams met twice in the 2017/18 season with the spoils going to the away teams on both occasions.

Key Facts – Blackburn Rovers vs Doncaster Betting Tip

  • Rovers have reached at least the second round in each of the last four seasons
  • Doncaster were knocked out in the first round last season, losing away to League Two Grimsby
  • The teams last met when Blackburn were in League One back in 2017/18

Doncaster are well organised as shown by their good defensive record in League One last year. However, this Blackburn team were the entertainers of the Championship. Their games had a total of 129 goals in them and it’s the style Mowbray has always adopted. It makes over 2.5 goals look very appealing.
