Neil Critchley’s Blackpool and Grant McCann’s Hull City go head-to-head at Bloomfield Road in the EFL Championship on New Year’s Day. These two clubs know each other well having been promoted together from EFL League One last term. The Tangerines have had a better time in the Championship so far this term, but the Tigers have shown a big improvement in recent months. Who will come out on top in this big clash in Lancashire?

Blackpool Preview – Will the Tangerines bounce back?

From mid-September to late October, Blackpool went on an outstanding run, winning seven of ten to bulldoze their way up the Championship table. However, they have managed just one win from their following ten.

The Seasiders have really struggled of late, suffering five defeats from their last six league games. Their only win during that run was a 3-1 home success over lowly Peterborough United on 18th December.

Since that victory over Posh, Blackpool have suffered back-to-back losses to Huddersfield Town and Middlesbrough. Neil Critchley and his troops will be desperate to avoid a third league defeat on the spin on New Year’s Day. Pool head into this one as the 11/10 favourites.

Hull City Preview – Can the Tigers roar back from Forest reverse?

Hull City looked to be heading right back to League One when they suffered five straight Championship defeats. However, since narrowly losing at promotion chasing West Bromwich Albion on 3rd November, the Tigers have got their act together.

Hull went on a four-game winning streak to fire themselves away from trouble. They secured wins over Barnsley, Birmingham City, Cardiff City and Millwall before drawing with Reading and Bristol City. They then suffered their first defeat since losing at The Hawthorns, letting a lead slip to lose 2-1 at Nottingham Forest on 18th December.

Hull have been ultra-competitive in recent months, turning themselves into a real tough nut to crack. Can they kick off 2022 with a positive result at Bloomfield Road?

Blackpool vs Hull City Betting Advice

As we touched on, Blackpool and Hull were promoted alongside one another in League One last term. At Bloomfield Road in December 2020, the Tangerines won 3-2. The pair then drew 1-1 at the MKM Stadium in January.

In the reverse league meeting in Hull this season, they also played out a 1-1 draw. Shayne Lavery opened the scoring for the Seasiders, but ten-man Hull bounced back thanks to Tom Eaves’ goal six minutes from time.

Key Facts – Blackpool vs Hull City Betting Tip

  • Blackpool have lost five of their last six
  • Hull have suffered just one defeat in seven
  • The pair drew 1-1 in East Yorkshire earlier in the campaign

Hull’s six-game unbeaten run came to an end at Nottingham Forest a couple of weeks back, but the Tigers will fancy their chances of bouncing back with all three points at Bloomfield Road on New Year’s Day. The away win is available at the top price of 23/10.

George Honeyman has been in outstanding form of late, scoring four goals in his last seven Championship appearances for Hull. At the big odds of 7/1, take a punt on Honeyman to score anytime in this one.
