Bochum – Germany’s second-best home defence to rise to the challenge?
Just the seven teams have more points on the board in Bundesliga home games this season than Bochum, with their tally of 18 from 10 such fixtures accounting for more than seventy per cent of their overall total. In the long history of the German Bundesliga, only one team – that being Borussia Dortmund in 2018-19 – has squandered a lead as big as the one currently enjoyed by Bayern Munich. This after a 3-2 victory in the previous round that was certainly hard-earned at home to RB Leipzig, who were on top for spells and were ultimately undone by an own goal, saw them open up a nine point buffer over second place.
The bare numbers are frightening. A depleted version of Bayern may have succumbed to Gladbach in their first competitive showing of 2022, but since then it has been a bulldozing experience for the opposition. Between FC Koln, Hertha Berlin and RB Leipzig, 11 were conceded to Julian Nagelsmann’s ruthless charges – who can become the first-ever Bundesliga team to net four or more in four successive away outings.
Key Stat: Bayern are on a run of four successive away victories in league play, having lost once on their travels all season (W8 D1 L1). In fact, the only occasions in which they didn’t score at least twice on the road were the only times they failed to win: 1-1 vs Gladbach, 2-1 vs Augsburg.
