Preview: Avenging last season’s humbling result at this same venue, a shock 4-2 loss, will be at the forefront of the Bayern Munich players’ minds as they attempt to make it three wins from three to start the season. That is assuming Bochum won’t have another colossal performance in them?

Bochum – Slow start suggests long season ahead?

It has been a wretched start so far from Thomas Reis’ side. The club comfortably staved off relegation last time round as they finished nine points clear of the promotion/relegation play-off in 13th. However they are immediately on the back foot after first succumbing 2-1 at home to Mainz, before somehow contriving to lose 3-2 at Hoffenheim last weekend despite forging into a 2-0 lead on 13 minutes.

If the sight of the current standings makes for grim reading – they find only Bayer Leverkusen beneath them – then a quick glance at who they are facing next will probably make them sick to their stomachs. That said, all those first-team members who stuck around over the summer will retain fond memories of last season’s corresponding fixture against the record champions: a 4-2 triumph at Vonovia-Ruhrstadion.

Key Stat: In 2021-22, Bochum lost five of 17 Bundesliga home matches (W8 D4) as they averaged 1.65 points per game at the Vonovia-Ruhrstadion. That placed them 11th of 18 across the league, however, only three sides tallied fewer home goals (21).

Bayern Munich – Bundesliga leaders unlikely to be dislodged anytime soon?

In an ominous sign for the rest of the league, Bayern Munich have won their opening two Bundesliga games for the first time in four years. Bearing in mind they were crowned champions for a tenth season running in 2021-22, and have only once failed to go on and win the league after opening with successive victories in the 11 previous instances of this happening, it really doesn’t like good for Dortmund, Leipzig et al.

Julian Nagelsmann’s charges have been imperious thus far, scoring eight for the loss of a single goal in dispatching with Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg. The understanding on the left-hand side between Davies and Mane already looks unplayable, while Jamal Musiala cannot stop scoring – three in as many competitive outings this term – as Bayern waste no time flexing their considerable muscles.

Key Stat: No team this Bundesliga season has had more shots on target (18) or scored as many goals (8) after the first two rounds than Bayern Munich.

Bochum Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

Bookmakers clearly aren’t entertaining any notion of last season’s shock outcome at this venue, a 4-2 defeat for Bayern Munich, repeating itself, making Julian Nagelsmann’s side overwhelming favourites for the three points. Prior to that upset result, Bayern had reeled off seven straight victories over Bochum. Five of those by at least a two-goal margin, including a 7-0 rout in Munich during the early stages of last season.

Bochum Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Bayern Munich have won 40 of their 70 Bundesliga matches against Bochum (D15 L9). However, the latter would prevail in the latest of these: a 4-2 home success last season, with the hosts 4-0 up before half-time.
  • Alongside Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich are one of only two sides with a 100% record after the first two Bundesliga rounds. Thomas Muller has provided at least one goal or an assist in these outings, while teenage prodigy Jamal Musiala scored in both.
  • 11 of 17 Bochum Bundesliga home games in 2021-22 went Under 2.5 Goals, with no team’s home matches seeing two or fewer goals more often than Thomas Reis’ side.

However, anyone banking on another Bayern rout – or better still, another thrilling upset – could be disappointed. Bochum’s home games last term were actually underwhelming for the most part, with 65% seeing fewer than three goals. This was especially true versus the better sides, with every home game against a team that finished between second and sixth place producing Under 2.5 Goals. But this is Bayern, so take the added insurance Under 3.5 Goals gives you.

Match Prediction: Bochum 0-2 Bayern Munich
